Food Drive Information and Updates
Avery Elementary vs. Keysor Elementary
LET'S GO ALL-STARS!!!!
A Note from Dr. Peterson
Avery Families-
A long standing tradition in the Webster Groves community is the Turkey Day rivalry game against Kirkwood. The Webster Groves and Kirkwood communities have fun with this rivalry in the weeks ahead of the game which takes place on Thanksgiving Day. One of the ways, at the elementary level, that we engage is to have a food drive competition against another elementary school in the Kirkwood School District. We compete against Keysor Elementary and last year...we won BIG!
All food items collected benefit our Hixson Food Pantry which help all of the students throughout the district. Included below is information about what food items to donate, ways to volunteer, and more! Also, just for a little added fun, we do have a grade level competition to see which grade level and class bring in the most items. It's a lot of fun!
- Because of our competition against Keysor and the items they are collecting - we are shifting our counting practices. The items donated will be counted per donation/box and NOT on how many items are inside. We realize this is a shift in what we originally communicated, but this is after discussing fairness with Keysor. They too will be doing the same.
- Food items can be brought in beginning on Monday, November 13th through Friday, November 17th.
- Please send food items to school with your child. The items are counted in the classroom and then brought to the office. Eventually, we will line our main hallway with all of the food items we collect.
- We are looking for some volunteers to support in taking the items to Hixson. If you are available to assist and have a vehicle that can carry food items - please see the below link for more information.
- We will provide a daily food item count to students and families.
Thank you for supporting this initiative!

What is the food drive?
There is a long standing tradition in Webster and Kirkwood around Thanksgiving. As part of this tradition, elementary schools engage in a friendly battle to collect food items to benefit our community. Avery competes against Keysor and last year, WE WON!
Who does the food drive benefit?
Hixson Middle School runs a food pantry out of their school. All food collected at Hixson is given to our own Webster Groves students! The students at Hixson create food bags for students who are in need and we send these food bags home on the weekends and over holiday breaks.
