LIWP Saturday Series: Gae Polisner
Researching Beyond Facts
Gae Polisner Presents Researching Beyond Facts
When students think of research, they likely think of dry, boring, tedious work. Yet, more than ever, research is essential to our students’ accurate understanding of their world. While research is essential to getting the cold, hard facts of any story correct, authors use research for so much more: to spark story ideas, to deepen layers of storytelling, and to create more believable, authentic characters. This level of research creates empathy in the reader by providing the writer the opportunity to “step into the shoes” of another.
In this workshop, Gae Polisner, an award-winning author of books including The Pull of Gravity, The Summer of Letting Go, and The Memory of Things, will share examples of how all the above happens, and will engage participants in their own brief research exercise which will then be incorporated into story. Gae will share additional ways for you to bring this research to your students, thereby expanding their creativity, empathy, and global understanding of their world.
Light refreshments and certificates will be provided. Please RSVP using the Google form below.

The Long Island Writing Project
The LIWP comprises teachers from kindergarten through university. Our seminar leaders are outstanding educators from different grade levels and disciplines in local schools, and we have a strong, ongoing partnership with Hofstra University's Department of Literacy Studies. LIWP teacher-consultants keep up with research and changes in education and their work is grounded in practical classroom approaches. Through our model of teachers teaching teachers, participants in the LIWP strengthen the classroom strategies they already find effective in teaching writing and develop new ones.
One of the most important foundational beliefs of our Project is that teachers improve their knowledge of teaching writing by writing themselves. Another is that the best way to improve our own teaching is through sharing what works with other effective teachers. We welcome your inquiries, and look forward to writing, learning and teaching with you.
The Long Island Writing Project at SUNY Nassau Community College is an approved Sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) pursuant to Section 80-6 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, New York State Education Department (NYSED).
