Message from the Superintendent on Revised Guidelines for Close Contacts

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Alabama Department of Health has updated the school toolkit which contains COVID-19 guidelines for schools. The changes are summarized below:

· Schools are now only required to quarantine close contacts of confirmed positive cases or suspected cases that include the major symptom of new loss of smell or taste.

· There is no longer the requirement to quarantine close contacts of suspected cases with a new cough or shortness of breath.

The guidelines have not changed regarding handling students who are ill. Students who have any symptoms will be sent home or asked to stay home and follow up with a health care provider. They may return to school with a note from a health care provider which indicates that they do not have COVID-19.

The guidelines have not changed regarding isolation for a positive case and quarantine for close contact exposure to a positive case. Students and staff diagnosed or testing positive for COVID-19 are still required to isolate at home for 10 days from the onset of symptoms and may return on Day 11 if they are well and have been fever free for 24 hours.

Students and staff who are determined to have been exposed to a positive case are still required to quarantine at home for 14 days from the last day of exposure and may return to school on day 15 if symptom free.

Students who have been quarantined due to exposure to a suspected case with the major symptom of loss of smell or taste may be released from quarantine if the suspected case is cleared by a health care provider with an alternate diagnosis. Otherwise, they will be required to quarantine the full 14 days from last exposure.

Please remember that isolation and quarantine are public health orders from the state health officer. Students and staff under isolation and quarantine should stay at home for the entire time frame and are not to be at school for any reason, including school activities, events, meetings, practices, or competitions.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we all work together to help keep our school and community as safe as possible during this pandemic.

Dr. Neill
