WHPE May Update
Building Strong Connections: Educate. Engage. Advocate
School is Out! Looking back on the 2017-2018 School Year...
Hello Wisconsin Health and Physical Education Professionals!
Okay, school may be out for MOST of you, but I know there a few schools that are still finishing up. :)
To the future professionals and university professors, congrats on another year of preparing yourselves/future educators to be leaders in our HPE field. Now, more than ever, we need strong health and physical educators entering our schools, ready to share with K-12 students what it means to live a healthy lifestyle and teaching them the skills and knowledge needed to thrive, grow, and advocate for themselves.
To the health and physical education teachers throughout Wisconsin, thank you for all you have done this year to make a difference in your students' lives, helping them to navigate the journey of their physical growth, health and wellbeing! We truly have the best jobs in the world, knowing that what we do in our classrooms helps to mold the whole child in an academic, physical , social and emotional capacity. Job well done!
Our work is never quite done, since we are always reflecting, learning and growing, and preparing for the future, but for the time being, take some much needed time this summer to rest, relax, and enjoy some time to play!
To all of our HPE colleagues and friends who are retiring this year, CONGRATULATIONS! Your contributions to our profession and your students have made a significant impact, and will live on for years to come. We wish you well in your retirement! Keep in touch! xo
Please check out the two professional development opportunities at the end of this SMORE! We hope you can participate in one or both of these summer institutes!

Creative Mode Fitness- OPEN Module (High School)
Creative Mode Fitness is a fun and vigorously active way to teach students critical fitness concepts and basic fitness planning. It’s designed to be used with heart rate monitor technology—preferably a team heart rate monitoring system, such as Polar GoFit.
The main objective of this module is to teach students fundamental fitness concepts through fun and vigorously active learning activities. Students will produce safe and appropriate training routines in a group setting, as well as personal Tabata routines that they can perform safely at home.

A Note from Keith Bakken, WHPE CEO
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
By now, many of you have heard that the Memorandum of Agreement between SHAPE America and WHPE that governs Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart will expire on July 31st.
After lengthy negotiations and input from all 50 states, SHAPE America and the American Heart Association were unable to reach an agreement that was satisfactory to both parties.
Please remember that we will operate under the terms of the existing contract until July 31st. Please contact me at kbakken@eagle.uwlax.edu if you have any questions.
WHPE Membership Update
As of July 1, 2018 there will be an increase in WHPE membership dues. With a desire to continue excellent programming and membership services to all of our WHPE members, and in light of a significant decrease in income from outside sources, the WHPE Board of Directors voted to increase membership dues.
Professional membership rate will be $80; Associate Membership $80; Student Membership $35 and Lifetime Membership $600.
Important JRFH/HFH Coordinator Update:
Educators who served as JRFH/HFH Coordinators for the 2017-2018 school year may still receive a half price membership for hosting an event this year, or receive a complementary WHPE membership if your event raised over $2000 this school year. WHPE will be honoring these JRFH/HFH membership incentives until 10/31/2018.
