Big picture

5th Grade Update

A few weeks ago, students experienced the benefits of their hard work by having the opportunity to spend their hard-earned Canaan Cash on extra recess, fidget making, electronic time, and more.As students continue to earn money, they will have another opportunity to spend their cash at our school store in just a few short weeks! If you are willing and able to contribute to our class store, please visit our Amazon Wishlist here!

In ELA class, students continue to find relevant text evidence and explain how it supports their claim using the CER writing strategy. Students will have a Roots Unit Assessment next Friday (October 15), over units 1-5. These words can be found in their ELA notebook. Please make sure they are studying each night. Additionally, your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes nightly. By this point in the nine weeks, each student should have completed three to four independent reading books.

In math, students continue to measure volume and track weights of objects overtime. They are learning that as a carrot begins to decay, the weight decreases.

In Science, students learned about “Decomposers” this week, and how important they are to our ecosystems. They are responsible for breaking down dead plants and animals and returning the nutrients back into the soil. Decomposers are Earth’s “cleaner-uppers”! We also learned about “prey” and “predators”. A quiz was taken on Friday over this weeks’ lessons.

Lastly, in social studies, students are learning about different regions. Throughout the week, they will work to create a poster that represents a landform given to them.

6th Grade Update

The 6th Grade fall party will be Monday, October 31st. This flyer is coming home with your student today. Please be sure to read it closely!

Unity Day

Unity Day is October 20, 2022 from 9:50-2:10.

On Unity Day students will travel in groups to stations to complete team building activities. We are in need of parent volunteers to help run stations as the students and teachers complete them. Unity day is similar to Field Day, but all stations require teamwork and cooperation to be successful. If you are available to help, be sure to sign up for the grade that your student is in. Lunch will be in the middle of unity day so volunteers may want to bring a sack lunch!

Thanks!

Guidance Corner - Mrs. Hein

Fifth-graders have been learning about and practicing self-regulation strategies. Students learned that even though the portion of the brain responsible for logic and reasoning isn’t fully developed until age twenty-four, they can use a variety of coping skills to manage their emotions and make good decisions. Please ask your child(ren) what coping skills they have identified as helpful to them and practice them together.

Whats going on in Specials at Canaan Middle School!

Fantastic Friday's in the Library

New to Canaan this school year is “Fantastic Friday!

Every Friday morning in the Canaan library something fantastic is happening. Students are taking part in a new program at Canaan that offers enrichment activities during study hall. These activities are an extension of the classroom with a focus on team building and student engagement. Canaan’s most recent “Fantastic Friday” activity had students putting their problem solving and critical thinking skills to the test with a student-led digital escape room that focused on collaboration, communication and literacy skills.

Led by school librarian Mrs. Conley, the enrichment study hall program will also incorporate activities that connect students to their greater learning community. From writing thank you cards to local veterans and community service providers to hosting local vocational guest speakers to talk with students about potential career opportunities, Fantastic Friday is a “fantastic” way for students to learn, connect and grow!

Girls' Tech Day

We are excited for Girls’ Tech Day! This event has been virtual for the last few years, and will be in person on Friday, October 21 from 9am-1:30pm at COSI.

AWS Girls’ Tech Day aims to inspire and motivate girls and young women to develop and pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

Middle and junior high girls, grades 5-8, will enjoy an engaging opening session with a dynamic panel of STEAM professionals, followed by interactive workshops to explore the industry further.

This event is FREE to all participants.

Students will need to be signed in at COSI on the day of the event and will be fully supervised by AWS staff and volunteers. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

Registration is now open! Please register before October 17th.
