What is Fracking?

Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground to get the natural gas hidden beneath rocks.

Impact on Land

Fracking may be a useful way to get natural gas but it causes major issues for the environment. The uneven weight distribution causes the land to cave and cause earthquakes in places where plate tectonics are not located.

Impact on Water

Fracking also has an environmental impact on water. When drilling into the earth, the pollution from the drills pollute the ground water which destroys well and drinking water.

In Texas

Fracking in Texas has had multiple earthquakes and has polluted ground water in areas where water is restricted due to drought.

Level 1: What is hydraulic fracturing (fracking)?

Level 2: How has fracking impacted the environment? Why is there fracking in the first place?

- Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is the process of drilling and injecting water into the ground to get natural gas.

- Franking has impacted the environment negatively by causing earthquakes and polluted water. Fracking was started when society needed to keep up with the demands of natural gas due to the rising pollution.
