Kia ora whānau, welcome to term 1 at Chelsea School!
Thank you so much for welcoming me so warmly into the school community. It has been so nice seeing new, friendly faces around. A huge welcome also to families who are new to our school whānau, we hope that you are settling in well and enjoying being part of Chelsea School. If you see a new face around - don’t hesitate to say hello and introduce yourself, starting at a new school is nerve wracking for everyone (not just the students), I have really appreciated this and I have no doubt that other adults who are new to our school community would appreciate this too.
Term 1 has started with a bang! We are straight into the fast paced, busy, exciting learning experiences focussed around - Tūrangawaewae. The underpinning thinking around beginning our year in this way is that knowing the history of your Turangawaewae gives us a sense of connection to the whenua (land) and knowing our Turangawaewae gives us grounding, a sense of belonging and meaning. At the beginning of a school year it is important for all students to form a strong sense of belonging to our school, their class and our wider school community. This concept will continue to grow and evolve across term 2.
A few start of year reminders:
Your first ‘port of call’ is your child’s classroom teacher. They are here to help, guide, encourage and support in any way possible
Sunhats - these need to be worn outside so please ensure that your child brings to school their named Chelsea School bucket hat each day
Sunblock - please ensure that your child has had sunblock applied before they come to school in the morning

Team Updates
Kākano Kōrero:
Kākano has been busy exploring their new location, making new friends and playing with the new and exciting Learning through Play equipment that arrived during the holidays! This week we have been reading "Little Kiwi and the Treaty" and talking about the agreement our hubs will make so that we are able to live in harmony like the kiwi in the story. Here's a link if you'd like to listen to the story.

Next week (Week 3) we have special visitors from the Royal NZ Ballet coming to teach some workshops, and lots of us will be involved in the new students/staff pōwhiri on Friday 23rd. A busy term awaits!
Pakiaka
Pakiaka has loved being back at school! We have been enjoying catching up with our friends and getting to know each other and our teachers. We have been focusing on our routines and expectations and settling back into learning. The warm weather has made swimming a lovely treat in the afternoons.
We have loved celebrating the Lunar New Year and Hub 2 were so lucky to have Kaylee’s parents come in and share a story and goodies with us.
Rito
Our Rito learners and teachers have had a great start to the year! We have been spending time establishing our class routines, procedures and expectations and getting to know those we share our learning spaces with. The sunny weather has meant that we have been able to get out for lunch eating, walks in the bush, PE games and swimming … long may it last! We have begun our DOT Time activities and it is already proving to be a firm favourite with many learners. If you have a passion or talent you would like to share with us, please chat to one of the hub teachers, we love having whānau joining us!
