May 15, 2022

Good evening BMES Families,

On Wednesday, we will have a general PTA meeting through Zoom at 6:30pm. Please plan to stop by the Bethel Manor PTA Facebook page for the link.

This week, our students will begin taking their end of year state testing in grades 3-5. Please ensure your child has a restful night sleep and a healthy breakfast. When they feel ready, they are more comfortable showing what they know!

  • Monday, 5/16: Reading 4 SOL
  • Tuesday, 5/17: Reading 5
  • Wednesday, 5/18: Reading 3- Day 1
  • Thursday, 5/19: Reading 3- Day 2
  • Friday, 5/20: VA Studies Grade 4

Just a friendly reminder, if you have returned the BMES Intent Form for next school year, we would appreciate it. This will allow the office staff to prepare student records for our families that are moving over the summer as well as appropriately create classes for next school year.

Lost and Found: Our lost and found is overflowing! If you child is missing a jacket, water bottle, lunch box, or other personal item, please have them visit the lost and found that is located into the cafe. They can stop by anytime or during lunch time.. We will be cleaning out the lost and found this summer but we hope you are able to locate your lost belongings.

Lastly, teachers have started to identify students for the YCSD summer academy program. This program is by teacher recommendation only and continues to support students with their academic needs. Please be on the lookout for the YCSD summer academy permission slip if your child's teacher has recommended your child(s).

If you wish to have your student engage in the YCSD Summer Enrichment camps, these camps are available for short periods of time throughout this summer at Yorktown Elementary. These enrichment camps include things like ABC Easy as 123, Chess Club, Rising 6th Grade Math Prep, Young Authors Camp, Readers Theater, STEM Enrichment Camp. More information can be found at this link along with the camp request form: YCSD Summer Academy Program.

Have a wonderful evening,

Mrs. Wagner

Upcoming Events

May 16- May 27: SOL Testing in grades 3-5

This year all SOL tests will be online for our grade 3-5 students. There are several things you can do to help your child have a positive testing experience:

  • Please do not schedule doctor or dentist appointments on testing days.
  • Make certain your child gets plenty of rest, eats a good breakfast, and arrives at school on time.
  • Students may bring pencils, a lunch, a water bottle and a book to read after testing.
  • Positive encouraging notes are helpful to remind students how much they have learned this year and how successful they will be showing it!
  • The campus will limit visitors on testing days.

Food Services Update

For the past two school years, meals have been provided to all YCSD students at no cost through a waiver provided by the USDA. This waiver will not be reissued. Instead, breakfast and lunch meals will return to a paid status, with no charges allowed, beginning this summer. Free or reduced price meals will be available (upon application and approval) to students whose family income falls within federally established guidelines. Families with students participating in Summer Academy programs who would like to take advantage of free or reduced price meal options are asked to submit applications by Wednesday, June 1, 2022, if applications have not already been submitted. Please go to to access the application. This application period will cover families until October 31, 2022.

Paper Applications are also available in all school offices so feel free to ask your child's teacher for a copy if needed.

Additional information regarding free or reduced price meal applications for the 2022-23 school year will be provided before the start of the year. If you have questions, please call 757-898-0468 or 757-898-0485 or visit the Let’s Talk – Ask YCSD platform.
