JEA Georgia Updates
Things to know!
Welcome!
Welcome to JEA -- we're so glad you joined the largest scholastic journalism organization for teachers and advisers. I wanted to introduce myself so you'd have a contact and personal resource if there's anything you need.
Maybe you already spent some time on our website, www.jea.org, but if you're new to the organization, I wanted to point out a few main aspects of what we do and how we can support you.

How can JEA help you?
1] Curriculum - We have a dynamic, robust journalism curriculum online based on 11 different skill/content areas. As a member, you have access to all of the materials on our curriculum website. The lesson plans include slideshow presentations, handouts, assessments, rubrics and examples. To access the materials, you'll need to log in using your member email address and password. If you ever lose track of those login credentials, you can email staff@jea.org and they'll take care of you.
[2] Conventions - We have three conventions each year. Two are huge national conventions in partnership with the National Scholastic Press Association, and those include thousands of students and their teachers. The info is available here. If you're considering bringing students to one of our conventions, it's helpful to plan well in advance. For the next school year, our fall convention will take place in Philly in November and the spring convention will take place in April 2022 in Los Angeles. Both offer keynote speakers, National Student Media contests, breakout sessions, critiques, media tours, adviser-online events and a variety of great learning experiences. Because of the pandemic, these events may become hybrid or totally virtual events, but they will still reflect the high-quality sessions our members have come to expect. Please pay close attention to the website for up-to-date information.
The third convention each year is for advisers only (no students) and takes place in the summer as one of our signature professional development events. The JEA Advisers Institute takes place in July in New Orleans and has a great program for all types of teachers with any level of experience or for advising any type of media. Complete info about Advisers Institute is available here. Personally, it's one of my favorite summer events because I can focus on my own professional development without taking care of my students -- and it's fun to meet new journalism teachers from all around the country for idea-sharing and networking!
[3] Stay connected - If you're on social media, it's easy to connect with JEA and stay up-to-date by liking our Facebook page. You can follow us on Twitter and connect with us on Instagram, too.
[4] Other resources online - Two of our biggest initiatives are online with resources to help. The JEA Digital Media website has tutorials and resources for all things digital. And the Scholastic Press Rights website offers lessons, resources, blog posts and materials related to the First Amendment and scholastic press rights, including ways to get help if you face censorship challenges.
As a member, you'll start to receive our quarterly magazine, Communication: Journalism Education Today. You'll also receive monthly email updates from our executive director Kelly Glasscock and assistant director Lindsay Porter.
