J. W. Leary Junior High School

April 10, 2022

Hello everyone,

This is a reminder that next week is a 4 day week. We will have school Monday-Thursday and then have a break with no school on Friday, April 15th.

This Monday will be a cycle day 4.

* April 8 was the last day of the 3rd quarter. Report cards will be sent home before break.

We will be having locker clean out on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you suspect your child has a full locker please send them with bags to help get materials home. If there are Chromebook chargers floating around your home, please have your child bring them in. We are running low on chargers.

* Spring Break will run April 15 - 21.

Welcome Robin Logan!

Shé:kon JW Leary staff,

It is a pleasure to reintroduce myself to the Massena District. I am happy to return to Massena and to be working as a Title VI resource once again. For those of you who do not know me, I spent eight years at the high school as the Title VI resource teacher, Native American student liaison, and also taught Haudenosaunee culture and history. I have a background in art education, and received my master’s degree in elementary education from Suny Potsdam.

I grew up in central New York and have family ties there as well as in Akwesasne. Most of my free time is spent with my 14 year old daughter, my family, and my nieces and nephews. We enjoy lots of things together but there is almost always food involved! I also like to fish, camp, be by the river, read, and tend to my garden in the spring and summer.

I am working towards learning my Kanien'keha language and hope to speak it fluently one day! I am passionate about helping my students to build skills that will help them to be more successful students. I look forward to helping the students here at JW Leary and getting to know everyone here! Please do not hesitate to ask any questions or seek out my support when needed. I am glad to help in any way that I can.

Niawen for welcoming me,

Robin Logan

This week was Dean of Students/Assistant Principal Week!

It is hard to extend a big enough thank you to Mr. Norris the JH Dean of Students. He refers to himself as an institution based on his experience and time at JH. He does a great job connecting with children and adults on so many different things.

Thank you Mr. Norris for all of the work you do at JH!

I want to thank Mrs. Colarusso-Martin, Mrs. Shoen, Mr. Alexander and Mr. Norris for helping to set up the sundae's. Thank you Mr. Kingsley for helping with clean-up.

A HUGE thank you to our faculty/staff for helping to let the kids know and giving them a few minutes out of class.

We hope to plan a more events for our children that are improving and sustaining great work!

Positivity Project Trait of next week is Fairness

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means you believe that all people have value. You approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.

Fairness is the product of moral judgement -- the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Moral reasoning has been explored and analyzed in two main traditions: the justice reasoning approach and the care reasoning approach.

For individuals, cultivating the character strength of fairness is correlated with highly desirable developmental outcomes. It helps people to become trustworthy friends, responsible citizens, and generally moral people.

To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week!

French classes experience Poisson d'avril

"Poisson d'avril" is the French version of April Fools. Kids cut out and color paper fish. They slyly tape it on another person's back and yell "Poisson d'avril". The idea behind it was to make sure that all people knew when the new calendar year changed from April 1 to January 1st. We had fun and are having a contest with our "poissons".

Bill of Rights

The students in Mrs. Reyes class are working together and using a Bill of Rights poster (made by Mrs. Kemison!) to complete a study guide in preparation for a unit test.

Eggs for Ukraine

Several 7th grade advisories combined to create eggs for Ukraine. The eggs celebrate nature. Rather than being painted on by bee's wax children are using colored pencils. Mrs. Ashley and other teachers provided several options for design. The eggs looked great! I am so impressed the children were able to get the eggs clean and drew on them keeping the shell in tact.
Massena CSD Technology Tips

This page contains a getting started, cheat sheet, and tips about using the various platforms we have at JWL and within the entire district.

Great job students and staff!

Coming back from break we took a step to acknowledge the students and staff who have been noted for their above and beyond work.

Over 50 students have received notes home outlining their positive contributions to our school community.

The form to nominate those going above and beyond is on our website or located here!

Something is concerning-

We also want to recognize that knowledge of situations is our best defense. Everyone is frustrated when something happens and they feel nothing was done. We cannot do anything if we do not know about it!

If people see/hear something, say something. Situations we have heard of we have handled.

The below form which is also linked on our website is one way to do that.

All concerns expressed to the school are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken. We cannot do something if we do not know about it. It is a service to the entire community when items are shared.

We are all in this together and we all have the same goal. Thank you for your support!

We know the pandemic has had numerous impacts on many things. As a building we’ve been fortunate this year to be able to offer support through a part-time social worker as well as the implementation of advisory (small groups with an adult) positivity project, CFES, WEB, and ongoing work with our teachers/counselors/administration.

This past week there was the 4th suicide of a student in St. Lawrence County schools in one year. We continue to have a focus on the safety and mental health of children.

Please share the below information with you child. We are all here to support you and your child. If you need anything please let us know.
