Hey Fiddlers & Future Fiddlers!
It’s almost time to start up some fiddlin’ around! Our first practice will be on Thursday, September 12 at 7:15PM. We’ll fiddle until 8:15PM. Div 3 Fiddlers will have a nice long break between rehearsals, so bring a sack dinner or convince a parent to bring some fast food. Div 2 & 1 will have a shorter break, but there will be time for a quick dinner also. All fiddle practices will be in the MU building, so Division 2 and Division 3 will not need to change buildings. Division 1 will need to get a ride over to the MU Building. Viola players may turn into fiddlers and you don’t need to read treble clef! Our fiddlin’ violists can pick up a violin and fiddle in their special alto clef. If you don’t have a violin, let me know and I’ll loan you one. Cellists can pick up a bass and slap it around! I do have one bass I can loan to cellists as well.
We do not play at the first two MYS concerts at the Mesa Arts Center. However, Fiddlers play the pre-show at the April Concert at the Mesa Arts Center. What a fun way to start the concert. The Fiddlers play shows at various places around the East Valley, such as RV Resorts and festivals. Past MYS fiddlers will tell you how fun these shows are; you will leave to a standing ovation and feel like a rock star! Since this year’s fiddlers is a restart (MYS FIDDLERS 2.0), I probably won’t schedule shows until Spring 2020. I will give families as much notice of the time/place as I get from the groups booking us.
My former students who have gone far with their musical careers have been the most versatile. They know how to harmonize, improvise, sing and play other instruments such as guitar and mandolin. They also learn great stage presence through our fiddle shows. One of our fiddlin’ alumni, Devin Gardner, was recently accepted by the prestigious Berklee School of Music. Many successful contemporary musicians, such as Brandon Marsalis, are graduates of Berklee. Devin is now touring with his own Bluegrass Band, Pretty Saro.
I am looking forward to another great year of fiddlin’ fun and I hope to see you there!!
Musically,
Mr. Felton
