The Weekly Word from CDS FP - February 18-February 22, 2019
Looking Back
Hello All,
Hello Student and Parents,
This past week was an exciting one due to the Jumping for Healthy Hearts event - one of the students’ favorites of the year. Mr. T will be sharing more with us about the success of the event, and if you attend the Term 3 Assembly, you will not only see a video about the event, you will also get to see the Grade 3 students perform live in the Dalton Hall. Fantastic job, Mr. Tronsgard on an excellent event!
The week ended with Uniform Free Friday and a big thank you to all the parents who donated their time and effort to make the birthday celebrations for the students a success.
Term 4 starts March 4, and it is also the first day of season three, which means that Labs and After School Programs change to the Spring Season offerings. In addition to the 13 offerings after school, the teachers are offering a total of 23 Labs throughout the week.
Students began signing up for Labs on Friday. ASP signups are now open and several have signed up. Please try to complete signups for ASP by 2/26, noon. Note that to sign up, you are not required to sign in as a student. Further, you are able to edit your choices after they are submitted, but feel welcome to also contact the office regarding changes you want. Regarding After School Program, please note that I understand the parent concern about Mathletes being an ASP for which one has to qualify; I know this can be upsetting for some, but please understand that our offerings in the After School Program are not meant to be academic, i.e. we have six periods a day in school and ASPs are not meant to be a continuation of the regular day. The offerings are extra-curricular in nature. We generally do not encourage students to attend academic hogwans in the evening, and we do not want our After School Program to be like one. Therefore, like the original purpose of Mathletes, it is a voluntary team for students to apply their math skills - that they already excel at - in a competitive manner. It could be compared to a club for students who speak French and want to compete in French speech contests - it is not to teach students French, rather it is to compete in French, therefore, a minimum ability is required.
The homework club that is offered after school is there to support the students who struggle to independently complete one’s homework, or if they are in need of support in reading, writing, or math, i.e. they do not achieve at grade level and need extra support to do so. It is not meant to excel at something, rather it is supportive in nature.
A reminder to all that next week will be a long weekend; Friday the 1st of March is an in-service day for teachers’ professional development.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Kindergarten, Music and the Silent Art Auction. Thank you, Ms. Pabon, Mr. Fejes, and Mr. Read!
Kindergarten with Ms. Pabon
Kindergarten has been learning about different reading strategies. This week we read Abe Lincoln’s Hat book, we were focused on expressing opinions about different topics throughout the story. Students express their thought about different problems that Abe Lincoln faced before becoming a president, this encourage students to analyze their reading and improve their listening skills. At the end of the book, students were asked if they would be a good president. Jihun affirmed that he would be a good president because he could help people.
Andrew said, “Being a good president is hard work”.
Music with Mr. Fejes
In music class, fourth graders created rhythms using words and then improvised with that rhythm on mallet instruments. They then combined their improvisation with a song they learned on the recorder to compose a larger piece of music!
First grade students have been learning about “Peter and the Wolf” by listening to themes that represent each character in the story. They’ve then learned about the instruments that play those themes and played singing games based on the characters!
Silent Art Auction with Mr. Read
The silent art auction is coming up! Please see the flyer for details on how students can submit their work.
