Madison's Carolyn McCarthy Actively Promoting NGSS Science and Engineering Practices!
For the past two years Carolyn has been working with Project Infuse at Steven's Institute of Technology. Project Infuse is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the purpose of developing classroom materials and lessons that integrate biology and engineering concepts as well as engage students in real world design activities. The materials developed and revised over the last two years by Carolyn and other members of Project Infuse have helped science teachers throughout the United States align their teaching with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
To date, Carolyn's involvement in Project Infuse has fostered the development of six lessons focusing upon engineering and design to provide answers to natural phenomena within the realm of biology. These six lessons are currently being piloted by Carolyn and other Project Infuse participants and pending feedback, these lessons will be published by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) as part of a book featuring infusing engineering into the biology curriculum. The infusion of engineering practices into science curriculum is aligned with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards).
In addition to presenting at the New Jersey Science Convention, Carolyn is sharing the six lessons with the Biology Department at MHS to support the newly revised Biology Curriculum. The Biology curriculum was revised this past summer (2016) and is fully aligned with NGSS.
