Socratic Seminar Crowdsourcing
Tuesday, October 15, 2019
Here's our loose agenda for this afternoon:
- Social Justice Standards - what are they and how might we use them to craft seminar questions?
- Assessing for Growth in Seminar/Dialogue Skills, Grading/Feedback
- Integrating Digital Tools w/ Seminars (Seesaw, Schoology, etc.)
- Management Strategies
#1: Social Justice Standards - what are they and how might we use them to craft seminar questions?
- excited to learn more - from trainings and others
- beginning of year? Identity, diversity as a group
- Ex: #19: principled decisions about when and how to take a stand against bias and injustice in their everyday life
#2 Assessing for Growth in Seminar/Dialogue Skills, Grading/Feedback
Rubric this group began drafting last year: https://tinyurl.com/y3wxzmsu
- Looking at the RUBRIC created last year - we will try to use this rubric and think about what works, what doesn't, changes we would make
- It is overwhelming to look at?
- Inner-outer circle - have the outer circle highlight and then track those three specific areas that we're focusing on
- Think about if all students are getting the opportunity to share about the three focused areas, for example, theme
How do you help kids grow in these skills, beyond scoring them in a rubric?
- when kids talk too much...what strategies do you use? -teacher can give a student a cue, talk to them individually
- when kids don't share much..build in the norm that other students will invite you in if you haven't shared, for example, saying, "___________, we haven't heard your thoughts about this topic. What do you think?"
Mid-seminar Check in's - to do a mini-reflection to remind everyone of the focus(es), stop and reflect on how you're doing, how you can help us reach your goal
For anecdotal notes, use rectangular spaces, make notes about how much each student talks, how many questions they ask, etc. **REFLECTION - white out student names and ask what everyone notices, see if they can tell which rectangle is notes about them
Use hand signals (Ron Clark) for agree and disagree...
#3: Integrating Digital Tools w/ Seminars (Seesaw, Schoology, etc.)
Schoology Ideas
- Sharing questions - Post questions chosen ahead of time for students to use in preparing
- Creating/voting on questions - post question ideas on Schoology
- Socratic Resources Posted for Students - like the question guide
- PARENT ENGAGEMENT - assignment after the seminar - discuss one of the questions from seminar with someone at home - create a Schoology post sharing 1-2 thoughts you/your family member shared
- Post-seminar Reflection - content, process, or both; individual, group, or both
- VIDEOS - post excerpts vs whole video - excerpts might be best to give a sampling, but avoid some parent comparisons of their child versus others
#4: Text Selection: What are you choosing mostly?
- The Declaration of Independence
- Robert Frost, "The Road Not Taken"
- a read-aloud that we just completed
- a complicated text for students - that they have to struggle through
Closure / Action Steps
