The Horace Mann & Leet Connection
Online Learning May 4-8, 2020
Summer School June 8-July 2
Horace Mann is currently accepting enrollment for summer school on June 8–July 2. Due to the current circumstances, we will most likely utilize a blended format of distributing physical learning materials and online learning activities. However, we are remaining flexible in our planning to allow for face-to-face instruction if allowed to do so.
Our plan is to focus on basic math, literacy, and critical thinking skills. In addition, we are coordinating a Project-Based Learning Unit for students to integrate subjects toward designing an event to contribute to our community.
We encourage families to submit their summer school registration to participate by May 22nd as we work to assemble weekly learning kits with books and materials for the children to use and keep. Applications for enrollment are available below and can also be found on our website.
Students currently enrolled at Horace Mann with an updated enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year may attend summer school at no charge. If you still need to register, you may download, complete, and email the enrollment form to lmking@nwmissouri.edu. Any tuition due for the previous school year must be paid in full to participate.

Library Book Checkout and Return
We are so happy to offer you virtual learning activities but we also understand the value of having hands-on materials in the hands of children. This week we will begin implementing drive-thru pick-up of library books for our families. Mrs. Shields and Nurse Cara have teamed up to put the appropriate precautions in place to safely share print library books with our families. Please use the protocol below to request and pick up materials.
- Use the Book Search Tutorial below to learn how to search the available books at Horace Mann.
- Use the Library Book Request Form to request up to 5 books per child by Tuesday at 9:00 pm.
- On Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 pm, drop off and pick up library books.
- Families should stay in their vehicles.
- One designated person will collect books dropped off from vehicles. (Books will be held in isolation for 72 hours prior to reshelving.)
- One person will deliver new books to vehicles.
- All library workers will follow CDC precautions of social distancing, proper handwashing in packaging materials, and the use of hand sanitizer between vehicle contacts.
Preschool
It's been good to see you!
- We collaborate with experiences together!
- We remind each other we are still here for each other!
- We remember that important learning and discoveries happen through play!
- We see our friends and smile again!
- We will provide a whole group meeting every morning at 9:00 a.m. at this link https://www.facebook.com/groups/262617593874304/ through the Leet Center private Facebook page. See you there!
- During the whole group meeting there will be a prompt for some play ideas, experiences or activities that might be fun for your child. You may choose to do them if you'd like. Conversations with your child, playing beside them and asking questions about how they are playing will be a great benefit to their play and learning themes.
- When you are ready, share your child's story with their own class in their teacher's new private group page on Facebook that they have made for this pandemic time. Your child will be able to connect with their friends, teach others a skill they have, or reach out to add to the group experience or project that their teacher is prompting.
- There will also be a few nutrition experiences throughout the weeks. You can find those on the Facebook page as well.
- Tune in to hear the our Nifty Nurse Cara share her wisdom with us! Tuesdays at 5 pm

Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families
At the Leet Center, family relationships and children are our passion! At the heart of our learning together, you will find educators who see children as capable learners. Children learn through investigation, exploration, and communication. Our pre-school environment is a natural home-like atmosphere that is filled with inquiry and joy each day.
The Leet Center is also home to our developing outdoor classroom and we believe that all the learning that happens indoors can also be present in the outdoor spaces. Open-ended materials and carefully cultivated spaces provide a place for collaboration, thinking, and representation of ideas. Our learning community includes educators and university students who are working together to listen and learn with children. Children, educators, and families each play an important role in honoring the intellectual and emotional integrity of children.
