On the Standards Front . . .
Google Offers Ease for Read(ing)&Write(ing) Processes
Google Read&Write is an excellent extension to use with all students in all classrooms. And, the tools lend themselves well to supporting reading and writing standards for all content areas.
If you would like help planning for these applications or to discuss where they will fit in your course design, please feel free to email me for an appointment.
3 Different Applications:
1. Highlight and collect notes -- as students research and read articles, webzines, and other online materials, ask them to highlight their information by categories, one color per category. Students can then "collect" the highlights in a Google Doc to turn in for an assessment of the *reading standards 1 & 2.
2. Provide opportunities for students to create vocabulary lists and present their findings based on importance and or understanding of the words to assess *reading standard 4.
3. Allow students to leave voice and written comments, highlight errors or Write Tools coded colors as peer response during the drafting stages of writing for an assessment of *writing standard 5.
*The standards offered in this article are the same number no matter the content area, hence, ELA and WHST are not designated.
Three Levels of Engagement (continuation from last week's)
The Schlechty Center for Engagement offers five different levels of engagement. Last week I shared the first two levels: Engagement and Strategic Compliance. This week, I'm showcasing the other three: Ritual Compliance, Retreatism, Rebellion. The behaviors for these lower levels of engagement are just as they sound with students not engaging and becoming disruptive to the learning environment. How many of your students fit these levels of engagement?
RITUAL COMPLIANCE
- The work has no meaning to the student and is not connected to what does have meaning.
- There are no substitute goals for the student.
- The student seeks to avoid either confrontation or approbation.
- The emphasis is on minimums and exit requirements—what do I have to do to get this over and get out?
Students who are ritually compliant:
- Learn only at low levels and have a superficial grasp of what they learn.
- Do not retain what they learn.
- Seldom can transfer what they learn from one context to another.
RETREATISM
- The student is disengaged from current classroom activities and goals.
- The student is thinking about other things or is emotionally withdrawn from the action.
- The student rejects both the official goals and the official means of achieving the goals.
- The student feels unable to do what is being asked or is uncertain about what is being asked.
- The student sees little that is relevant to life in the academic work.
Students who are in retreat:
- Do not participate, and therefore learn little or nothing from the task or activity assigned.
REBELLION
- The student is disengaged from current classroom activities and goals.
- The student is actively engaged in another agenda.
- The student creates her own means and her own goals.
- The student’s rebellion is usually seen in acting out—and often in encouraging others to rebel.
Students who are in rebellion:
- Learn little or nothing from the task or activities assigned.
- Sometimes learn a great deal from what they elect to do, though rarely that which was expected.
- Develop poor work habits and sometimes develop negative attitudes toward intellectual tasks and formal education.
