SpEd Speak-December 2015

Created Especially for You by Lee, Abby, Corina, and Toni

A Note from the Director While Dashing Through the Snow

Greetings Everyone,

I’ll begin by THANKING YOU for your continued support of my transition into the Director’s position. I have enjoyed getting to know everyone and feel blessed to be a part of our team. Continuing on, I congratulate all of you on your persistent and authentic work when supporting our students. Your efforts are not only evident via our students’ success, but also in our recently earned state recognition within the Gifted and IDEA File Review. All submitted IEP files were found to be compliant and that achievement is a direct reflection of the work you do.

Next, to continue our understanding of how to best support you, I have included below a Survey Monkey link. This is a short survey and is completely anonymous. Please take time to complete this survey, so to assist us in our continual efforts in improving our service to you.

In conclusion, I wish all of you a joyous and restful holiday with family and friends. You are an incredible team and I feel fortunate to be leading and learning from you. You are all uniquely talented and make an extraordinary contribution to our team.

Candy Cane Wishes for a Fabulous Winter Break!

A BIG thank you to all of you for your hard work and commitment to our students with special needs. Please know you are GREATLY appreciated! We wish you a wonderful break with time to relax and enjoy the company of those you love-family and friends. :)

Old Man Winter's Assistive Technology App Request Process

The App Request Process for our new "red" Ipads has been a work in progress. Thank you for your patience as the many parties involved worked out the glitches. The attachments explain the current process for SPED. Please call or email Kim Leaf with questions. You can also find it on the AT Tab of the SPED Blackboard Page.

Frosty's Take on Purchasing Apps with PTA Funds

When purchasing Apps using PTA funds, the building principal is the person who will determine whether the purchased App belongs to the teacher or to the building. Please check with your building principal.

Let it Snow Progress Reports

Second quarter is rapidly moving and progress reports will be due soon! Please have your progress reports prepared for dissemination when grade cards are sent. We are also asking that you email your building school psychologist when all of your progress reports are complete in SEAS. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Over the River and Through the Woods File Review

As a way to maintain continuous improvement on our department goals, and also provide meaningful professional development, we will be conducting two internal IEP file reviews during second semester. Files will be randomly selected and reviewed by designated teams. Feedback will be provided to buildings and teams following the review process.

The file reviews will be held from 8:00 am-11:00 am on January 27th and March 23rd. We would like participation from all buildings and disciplines. If you are interested in participating, please email Janet by December 14th. Coordinators will share further information at upcoming SpEd meetings.

Snow Icecream Related Services & Assistive Technology

When scheduling IEP meetings for students who receive Related Services and/or Assistive Technology, please remember to give notice of the meeting to the appropriate Related Services providers and Kim Leaf for Assistive Technology. You will want to include them in the Outlook appointment for the IEP meeting.

Fuzzy Slippers and Medicaid Billing for Nursing Services

On the Service Plan Chart, please remember that nursing services will need to be in 8-minute segments for billing purposes. We are no longer able to bill for anything less than 8 minutes. In addition, the nurses' log and the Service Plan Chart should be in agreement.

Wrapping it Up-December IEP Meetings

If holding IEP meetings in December, please scan the paperwork to Alex prior to leaving for break. This will eliminate the possibility of things getting 'lost in the shuffle' between semesters. Thank you!
