Roadrunners, Let's Stay Connected
Crystal Springs Elementary School
The Weekly Wrap by Principal Nielsen- March 5th
Crystal Springs is excited to welcome Superintendent Dr. Reid to our school next Thursday, March 11th. Each year, Dr. Reid visits each school - first meeting with parents and guardians.
Please join us Thursday, March 11 at 8:25 a.m. for an informal 30-minute meet and greet with Dr. Reid. This event is open to all Crystal Springs Elementary School parents and guardians. Be sure to bring your ideas and questions. After leaving the meet and greet, Dr. Reid will get a glimpse of distance learning in the classrooms before joining a group of students for Brunch Club.
Please join the Meet and Greet using this link.

Reopening of Schools
Last Friday night, Superintendent Reid released Northshore's reopening plan. We are still finalizing many of the details of this plan. I will continue to share new information as I have it, and I will also schedule open times to connect with you virtually so we can support your family to the best extent possible.
Here is the video shared in Dr. Reid’s email last Friday. This provides some details regarding the return to in-person instruction and the safety measures that will be in place.
The return to in-person learning in a hybrid model will be coupled with an option to remain fully remote if that is the best option for your family. Once we have more information about what the hybrid and fully remote models look like, you will be surveyed about you plans.
At this time, we are unsure of the specific impact your choices might have on classroom teacher assignments and class placement. Your survey responses will help us plan. We will communicate with you about what you and your child can expect once the survey has been given and responses have been reviewed.
Bridge Weeks identified in our reopening plan are specifically designed to provide a variety of learning experiences related to safety at school, while also providing in-person social interactions before we begin in our hybrid model. These activities will be led by the YMCA Navigators team, as they have been engaging in these types of learning and safety teaching throughout the pandemic. Northshore educators will support the YMCA Navigators with planning some of these activities. More information to come soon.
Here is a link to a more visual version of the reopening plan with dates and student groups. Please read the descriptions at the bottom of the page to understand the groupings more fully.
There are details still to be developed about our expansion to hybrid instruction. Please understand that your child’s teacher does not have any additional information beyond what has been shared in the Reopening Plan communications or in this message. You can count on our Crystal Springs staff to communicate with you as new information is available, and to plan thoughtfully with you for your child’s success.

Highly Capable Testing
Students in grade 4:
The week of March 15, the Accelerated Models and Programs Department plans to begin online assessments of students who were referred for highly capable screening and assessments. The referral window was open from July through October, 2020. Students who need to take the NNAT3 screener will need a district issued device. The Accelerated Models and Programs Department will email a link to those students in order to schedule a time to get them a district device. Other students who have qualified, will receive a link to sign up for an Iowa Assessment. Please direct any questions to hicap@nsd.org.
Students in grades 2-3
We plan to begin online assessments of students who were referred for screening and assessments once grades 5-7 testing is done. We will send out invitations to test toward the end of March or beginning of April. We will conduct all testing online.
Students in Grade 1
We will conduct our universal screening and assessment when first grade students return to the buildings. Classroom teachers will assist in giving the NNAT3 screener. Parents will have the option to bring their student to school on the specific testing day even if they are opting not to have their student return to the classroom. The NNAT3 will then be proctored by someone other than the classroom teacher. We will let families know the date and time of testing at their school by email.
Kindergarten
We will compile current data from WaKIDS and iReady to compile a highly capable watch list for our current kindergarten students. No further screeners need to be given.
