ELP / Computer Science ended the first quarter with exciting showcases of student programming! Each student spent multiple weeks learning JavaScript, a computer programming language, then finished the quarter by designing and programming a video game on their own! Students then presented their games to the class, and we had lots of amazing games shown. We had students attempt everything from Pong and Asteroids up to an Endless Fish-Runner, an ambitious clone of Among Us, Mario-style platformers, and even a Corgi-themed Pac-Man clone! I’m extremely proud of what the students were able to accomplish in such a short time period!
Our major second-quarter project is starting up soon, themed around NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Students are making a creative-writing themed project, either developing a Novel length work over the month, iterating and refining a Short-Story length piece of writing, or programming Interactive Fiction games using their programming skills. Many students have already launched into their writing projects, and I’m seeing exciting story ideas already stirring in their minds. Students will be frequently meeting with peer groups to get feedback and refine their writing, as well as brainstorm with friends. I can’t wait to see their creativity and storytelling over the next month!
