Dear Spring Mills High School Families:
With the recent changes to the West Virginia Department of Education’s policy on the metrics for students being in school, we wanted to send out some information you may find helpful to determine what days your child will be here at Spring Mills High School.
Let’s begin with Click students. For you, not a whole lot is changing. Your schedule will remain intact but we do ask that you have patience with your teachers as they adjust to the hybrid schedule.
For Brick students, the biggest change is the metric for being in school. We will now be using the West Virginia DHHR COVID-19 Map to determine whether or not we are in-person. A link to this map can be found here:
There are several links you can click on that page. You will want to click on the link for “County Alert System” which will redirect you to a page reflecting all 55 counties and their designated color for that day. The map updates around 10:00 each morning, barring issues at the state level with data entry. The typical technological caveats apply but the updates have been reasonably consistent since August.
To determine whether or not we will be in person, Berkeley County will use the following criteria:
Until further notice, if Berkeley County is Red on the DHHR map, remote learning will continue for all high school-aged students. Once Berkeley County moves to Orange, Gold, Yellow, or Green, we will be utilizing a hybrid schedule at Spring Mills High School. To simplify this process, we will be using the DHHR map on the following days to determine whether or not we are remote:
Monday’s Map - Determines in-person learning for Tuesday and Wednesday. We will send an NTouch from Spring Mills High School to let families know our status.
Wednesday’s Map - Determines in-person learning for Thursday and Friday. We will send an NTouch from Spring Mills High School to let families know our status.
Once we do move to Orange, Gold, Yellow, or Green, the hybrid schedule looks like this:
Monday: 1st - 7th
Remote Learning for all students. Teachers may be on TEAMS meetings for a check-in and Brick students will follow their normal Monday schedule. Students will need to check Schoology and message their teacher to determine office hours for extra support.
Tuesday and Wednesday
Tuesday: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th
Wednesday: 2nd, 4th, 6th
Brick students with the last name beginning with A through K will be in-person.
Brick students with the last name beginning with L through Z will be remote on an asynchronous schedule.
Thursday and Friday
Thursday: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th
Friday: 2nd, 4th, 6th
Brick students with the last name beginning with L through Z will be in-person.
Brick students with the last name beginning with A through K will be remote on an asynchronous schedule.
What if the county map is Red on Monday but Orange on Wednesday?
In this instance, Brick students with the last name beginning L through Z would attend school in-person on Thursday and Friday. Brick students with the last name beginning with A through K would be on an asynchronous remote learning schedule the entire week.
What if the county map is Orange on Monday but Red on Wednesday?
In this instance, Brick students with the last name beginning A through K would attend school in-person on Tuesday and Wednesday. Brick students with the last name beginning with L through Z would be on an asynchronous remote learning schedule the entire week.
If the map is Orange on Monday/Wednesday but changes to Red on Tuesday/Thursday does my child still attend in person?
If the map would turn Red on Tuesday, we would be remote on Wednesday. If they map would turn Red on Thursday, we would be remote on Friday. A message from SMHS would be sent out through NTouch and we would announce it to students as well.
My child has a younger sibling and they need to attend on a different schedule than their designated days. Can I make a change?
Yes - Please contact their counselor and we will accommodate those requests on an as-needed basis.
Will I be notified of changes to the schedule?
Yes - We will be putting out an NTouch on Monday and Wednesday letting families know our status for in-person learning for as long as these guidelines are in place.
What is the best way to get information about specific classes?
All communication from teachers will come through updates on Schoology. Otherwise, the best way to reach teachers is through their email. You can search our staff and find their email address here:

We know this has been a challenge from a communication and logistical perspective. We are hopeful this message clears up any confusion you might have about the schedule and the metrics we are using. We will do everything we can to alert you to changes and try to clearly communicate our status using NTouch, our webpage, and social media.
While under no circumstance has this been ideal, you have worked with us to solve the daily problems that have presented themselves. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding this school year and we look forward to a return to normalcy in the not so distant future.
