A Note From Mr. Nakano
Thank you for coming to Back to School Night! It was wonderful sharing more with you and look forward to a great year partnered together for the best interests of each of your children. We hope you enjoyed touring the classroom with your scholar and connecting with other families.
Dates to Remember
Tuesday, September 10th - Picture Day
Friday, September 20th - Discovery Cube Science Assembly
Monday, September 23rd - Author Visit order forms due
Friday, September 27th - Author Visit
- All Wednesdays are early dismissal. Please pick up your child at 1:20 on Wednesdays.
Scholastic Book Clubs
Scholastic Book Club is a fantastic and easy way to encourage your child to read, read, read! The extra benefit is that every time your child orders a book, your child’s class receives points, money, or books that support our learning! Please click on the link below and enter your child's class code to start your reading adventure!
The deadline to order books is: Friday, September 6th.
Students will be reading books of their choice every day. We anticipate they'll go through a lot of books! We have classroom libraries and the school library available, but students may also bring books from home. We want them to be reading books they love!
A good rule of thumb is between 100 points below and 50 points above their lexile level. 3rd grade students have their current lexile levels on their STAR Reading reports, while we are currently testing 2nd graders on their levels.

Curriculum
Language Arts
Science
This week, they learned their culminating activity will be to build a marble skatepark. Through the unit, our scholars will be learning about ramps, angles, and more. With each lesson they learn, they will be modifying the design of their project before they build.
Ask your scholar about how they think skateboards get to the top of a ramp or what force they think gets a ride at the fair moving.
Parent Corner
Growth Mindset
Praise the Process
It is often easy to tell a child, "You're so smart!" when they succeed at something. However, research has shown that students that hear this kind of praise become more anxious and afraid to try because they think that failing at something means that they are no longer "smart". This anxiety and fear can hold them back from reaching their potential.
So instead of praising "being smart", praise the effort, goal setting, persisting through challenges, or being creative!
You can say something like:
- "Wow! You must have worked really hard on this!"
- "What a great idea!" Can you tell me how you are going to make it happen?"
- "I am so impressed that you didn't give up when things didn't work out the first time."
- "Great problem solving!"
