Wisdom from the Queen Bee Mrs. Starlin
They are predicting very cold weather next week. Dress warm! Please make sure your child has a heavy winter coat, gloves, and a hat when they are waiting for the bus. Teachers check the windchill before they go out, but may walk the track for a few minutes of fresh air, even if it is cold.
As gray winter days are upon us, remember to be kind and check on your neighbors, family and friends.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Tucker
Whatever you think of Valentine's Day, it is a great excuse to show some love to our children - and to help them learn to appropriately express love to others. I challenge you to find a way that your child and family can show someone love. Have your child help pick out someone for this special project. Maybe they would color a special picture and mail it to a relative far away. Maybe they could take a fun snack or candy item to a neighbor who lives alone. Maybe they could write a thoughtful note to their teacher or a classroom helper. Help them share a specific and meaningful example of why they chose that person - for example: "Thank you for being my neighbor and saying hello to me." or "I miss your hugs Uncle John." Showing love and appreciation is something we all can do! If you take on the challenge, please share a picture or description with me on class Dojo. I love to see our kids spreading kindness.
Valentine's Day Announcements
Your child's teacher will provide instructions on any special Valentine's Day procedures this year. Look for communication in your child's folder or through Dojo. Please do not send in Valentine's with food or candy as it is against our nutrition policy. Our kitchen will provide a special Valentine's Day snack.

Second Step Classroom Lessons
Second Step Lesson
Kindergarten took the week off after finishing Unit 3 on emotional regulation last week. Our kindergarten student have learned that if they have a big feeling they can stop, name their feeling, and then choose a calming strategy like taking a belly breath or counting. They often still need prompting of when to use it, but it is something you can encourage them to use at home as well. They will begin the final unit on problem solving next week. First grade did lesson 18, which continued introducing the problem solving model from the poster above. The first grade home link is below. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or the school counselor Mrs. Tucker.
