Classroom News!
Our big treat this week was the field trip to the Great Harvest Bread Company in Rockville. Baker Rodney took us on a tour of the bakery and showed us how bread is made from scratch. We had the opportunity to see a grinding mill, a giant mixing vat and hook, and the large baking oven. The children were able to touch wheat seeds, wheat flour and bread dough. At the end of the tour we were all offered a delicious slice of honey wheat bread and a mini loaf to take home! Thank you to the parent chaperones for driving us to and from the bakery.
There are times in Kindergarten when a story we read seems to resonate with the children. At these times the collective attention of the class is at it's highest and the children are keenly interested in sharing their thoughts and ideas. That's what happened this week when we read a story called "Don't Call Me Special." This book inspired an important conversation about making assumptions about people based on their appearance. Though the interests of 5 and 6 year olds can be fleeting, this may be a conversation you want to continue or touch upon at home.
Conversation Starters
* What does it mean when something is "certain?" What does it mean when something is "likely?"
* What different kinds of bread did you taste in your classroom? Which one did you like the best?
* What are some things you feel you are good at? What are some things that you are working on?
Fun Things To Do At Home
* How many kinds of bread can you find at your house, at the store or at a restaurant? (If you are feeling ambitious you could even bake some bread!)
* Make up some addition story problems to ask your child. Use your child's name and the names of friends and family as motivation!
* Sing some songs in a round!
