Week 7 Principal's Update

9/28/20

Dear Quartz Hill High School Families,

It is unbelievable to think that we are approaching the end of the 1st quarter already! This update brings about some positive news in regards to our baby steps towards returning to school. Our prevocational Special Education and English Learner student population will be returning on or around October 12th, as will the teachers and support staff in these classes. We cannot wait to be able to service these students and their families physically on site. We are in preparations to being able to do so in the safest manner possible and we will be ready come that return date. Although these first steps may be taken with a bit of angst and apprehension, many are ready for our inevitable return. With this return comes our sights on more pods of students returning. Although I cannot give a timeframe for our blended return, bringing these first student pods back is certainly a step in that right direction.

Please take a few moments to review this week's update. Thank you for your support and what you are doing for your individual student as they work remotely.

Sincerely,

Your Principal, Zach Mercier

Important Dates Approaching

October 9th - End of the 1st Quarter

It’s hard to believe we are nearing the end of the first quarter! While you will receive a hard copy report card in the mail, you don’t need to wait. As a reminder, you can check your student’s progress using one of the three options below:

AV High School District App - This app gives you news, up-to-date information, as well as your student’s progress. You may download the app on both the Apple App Store and Android App Store. When in the App Stores search for avuhsd, choose Quartz Hill High School from the list, allow notifications if asked, and you are in!

PowerSchool App - This app ties right into your PowerSchool parent portal. You will get live updates on grades and attendance. This app is also found on the Apple App Store and Android App store. Search for PowerSchool. The district code is NWMZ.

Parent Portal: https://powerschool.avhsd.org This is where you can access all your student’s information from within PowerSchool. You can create an account using the Create an Account tab and filling out the information. You can get your student’s Access ID and Access Password from your school sites main office.

October 21st - Student Free Day - This means your student DOES NOT have to log in to their Google Classrooms on Oct. 21st.

Attendance and Absences

Attendance is taken daily during our live interaction classes, so make every effort to be in attendance. Although work is posted on Google Classroom, the quality instruction is provided by our teachers daily in class. The most important aspect to your student receiving this quality, distance learning, instruction is through their attendance in the live sessions.

In the event that your student must be absent, you may clear an absence using using the same process as normal. Contact our attendance office directly to clear an absence. Your student may also clear an absence by attending the Office Hours of the class missed during the same day.

To clear an absence, contact:

Ms. Rice at srice@avhsd.org or 661-718-3100 ext. 830 for last names A-K

Ms. Garibay at rgaribay@avhsd.org or 661-718-3100 ext. 831 for last names L-Z

The Quartz Hill Update Distance Learning Edition - Week of September 28th 2020

QHHS ASB Presents: 𝓕𝓲𝓷𝓭 𝓨𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓖𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓭 - 𝓕𝓾𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓮 𝓡𝓮𝓪𝓭𝔂 - 𝓥𝓲𝓻𝓽𝓾𝓪𝓵 𝓟𝓻𝓸𝓰𝓻𝓪𝓶

We want to thank everyone who participated in the opening assembly of Future Ready. This week we turn to Flipgrid and we will continue to use Flipgrid all the way through week #7.

You and your students can access materials for week #3 by going to flipgrid.com/51545f68 or you can download the flipgrid app and use the join code 51545f68.

This week students will learn how believing in themselves and trusting their skillsets are two of the most important aspects of self-awareness. But so is understanding that you have room to grow, learn, and appreciate other viewpoints.

"Self-awareness starts with knowing that you're not necessarily right about everything." - Kieran Wilson

The student activity this week is a challenge to go have a conversation with someone who you have recently disagreed with on a topic. They could be your sibling, classmate, or friend and the topic could be anything! Take this opportunity to learn more about their beliefs by asking questions that allow you to learn how they came to that conclusion. Come back and share what you learned and if it changed the way you feel!

At the end of the video is a circle activity where students can brainstorm career pathways related to a lifestyle they would like to pursue.

Suicide Prevention

Big picture

September is Suicide Prevention month, and the Antelope Valley Union High School District is on a mission to reduce the stigma attached to talking about suicide. This month, we ask everyone to“Take 2” to help prevent suicide – take two minutes to raise awareness about suicide prevention, take two minutes to reach out for help, take two minutes to support a friend, and take two minutes to educate yourself. Stay tuned all month for more prevention information and activities, but, if you need help now, reach out to a parent, teacher, counselor, psychologist, or trusted adult. We are here to help.
