Forward Testing in April
Fifth grade will begin Forward Testing right after Spring Break. We first prepare and practice and then take the tests during a two week period - April 1st through April 12th. Please let your child’s teacher know ASAP if you child will be gone at any point during this time period.. We understand that things will come up but if there is something already planned for your child, please let us know so we can make arrangements for your child during testing.
Also, please check with your student to see if they have working earbuds or headphones. There is a listening component to the Forward test, and each student needs to have some type of head phones to complete this part of testing.
Thank you!

Mrs. Edward's Guidance Lesson
This month during classroom guidance lessons, students worked on calming strategies and mindfulness. Students learned different breathing techniques and calming strategies that can be implemented when experiencing something difficult. Mindfulness techniques of tapping into our senses as a biological way of calming down were utilized as well. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
Optimist Swim Club
Remember, if you would like to join the Rose Glen Swim Team, practices begin March 20th at 4 pm at West High School. The swim team is FREE and is open to all boys and girls in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades who can swim 25 yards without stopping.
It is not mandatory, but most kids like to get Swim Team Spirit Wear. You can still order Spirit Wear! The shop closes Monday, March 11th.
Order your swim team Spirit Wear on this site: https://skyhigh.orderpromos.com/RoseGlen
Parents are required to drive their children to the practices and pick them up on time. (Carpooling is a great idea!)
Each child is required to attend three of the five practices in order to participate in the swimming meet on Saturday, April 6th.
The 5 Practices are as follows. Please be ready to enter the pool by 4pm!
Wednesday, March 20th @ 4:00 - 5:00

Reading Unit 5 - Investigation
5th Grade is starting Unit 5 - Investigation. The unit focuses on the essential question - How Investigation Inspires Innovation? Students will focus on pivotal inventions that have advanced the development of the railroad system, NASA space travel, and individuals who have changed our world. Also, students have been focusing on improving their listening, speaking, and writing skills through literature discussion groups. We have also been focusing on inferring and analyzing text to support a deeper level of understanding.
In writing we will be wrapping up our fractured fairy tale unit. In grammar we are focusing on conjunctions and combining sentences.
Math Workshop
The fifth graders have started working on Unit 6: Multiplication and Division of Fractions
Essential Questions:
- How can a whole be partitioned into parts?
- How can different strategies be helpful when solving a problem?
Enduring Understanding:
- Mathematicians understand that mathematical operations are used in solving problems by choosing, combining, and applying effective strategies.
There are many targets in this unit, but we have worked on the following:
I can interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator.
I can solve word problems involving the division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers.
I can multiply a whole number by a fraction using visual fraction models.
