Spring Break is a great time to reinforce the social-emotional learning done in school at home. Problem-solving, community building, and self-management are just a few SEL skills these picture books depict in a fun and engaging way. Check these books out to spark discussion and continue SEL development during spring break. You may find some read-alouds on YouTube. Keeping Busy During Spring Break
Ideas from Ms. Osborn our Kindergarten Teacher
*Use sidewalk chalk to write sight words on the sidewalk/driveway. (If you don't have chalk, you can also use a paintbrush and a cup of water.)
*Using a magazine or newspaper, have your child circle and read all the sight words he/she can find.
*Visit the local library..
*Create thank-you cards for local policemen & firemen.
*While visiting your local grocery store, have your child create their own shopping list with a list of items - one item for each letter of the alphabet. (Ex. a = apples, b = bananas, c = carrots, etc.)
*Have your child practice counting to 100 by counting something in your home (goldfish crackers, cherrios, dry beans, cotton balls, small rocks, etc.) After counting, have your child use the item they counted to create a neat picture.
Activities for MATH
Real World Experiences:
- Take your child to the store and have them total up groceries or add up items from a menu before purchasing
- Cook and have your child measure ingredients with 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8 cups
- Look at the numbers on a gas pump or signs for gas and have them identify the places of the digits (numbers) on the gas pump
- Use estimation to calculate about how much money would be spent on gas if you need ___ gallons
- Have your child add or subtract numbers as you are driving, this helps build numeracy
- Have your child multiply in the car as you are driving, this helps build numeracy
- Have your child count and total a collect of coins from a jar, piggy bank, or a pocket
- Here are some games that only require a deck of cards to work on addition, subtraction, and multiplication

SORA Online eReader
Sora is an online eReader application that Humble ISD students have access to through MyHumble. Humble ISD purchases eBooks through this platform and sorts them according to the student’s grade level. Parents should be aware that Sora also provides an option for students to connect to Harris County Public Libraries (HCPL), which increases the availability of eBooks. Humble ISD does not have the ability to restrict access to the book selections that are available to students through the Harris County Public Library system.
At the start of the 2023-2024 school year, parents will decide whether or not their student can access Harris County Public Libraries through the Sora application in MyHumble. Parents will be asked to make a choice for their student through the online Annual Update process.
For the remainder of this school year, if you do not want your student to have access to the Harris County Public Libraries through Sora, please complete the Sora Access to Harris County Library Opt-Out form and the district will remove access for your child. No action is required if you want your child to be able to access the Harris County Public Libraries.
If you have any questions, please contact your student’s campus Library Media Specialist.
