May 22, Child Development closing program, Inspired by the Book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?, Parkland High School auditorium,10:00 AM. The program represents the culminating work of the students in the Child Development Laboratory and Child Development Management classes. The nursery school children are singing and reciting poems with finger plays under the direction and assistance of the high school child development students.Portfolios created by the Child Development Management students will be on display. Scrap books with developmental concepts created by the Child Development Laboratory students will be presented to the preschool parents.
Now - May 23, Parkland Food Service will be giving away weekly prizes to students who select breakfast and/or lunch each week. Prizes announced each Friday! Students must choose breakfast and/or lunch each day for a complete week to win! Eat both and double your chances to win prizes such as Ipod Shuffle, 5.6” LED TV, Nook, AMC Movie Tickets and more.
Announcements/Achievements
The Lehigh Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced the Scholar Athletes winners for each sport and Molly Diamondstein (Girls’ Lacrosse) and Nishad Gothaskar (Boys’ Tennis) were winners from PHS. All winners are quality student-athletes within their school community and the Conference. The following criteria was established and considered for the selection of each school’s nominees as well as the LVIAC Scholar-Athlete for each sport.
Academic Achievement- 40%- includes GPA, Class Rank, SATs, and participation in
National Honor Society, Honor Rolls, and National Merit Scholarship
Athletic Achievement- 40%- All State, All Conference, Captaincy, Special Achievements
Extra-Curricular / Community Activities – 20%- Participation in school activities, participation on other varsity teams, community activities
Parkland High School junior and AP Music Theory student, Jacob Wilkinson, was named a winner in the 2014 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Student Composition Contest. He was one of only 12 students chosen nationwide, and the only student from Pennsylvania, to receive this honor. His winning piece,"Sonata for Clarinet and Piano," (written earlier this winter) will be performed in a “Young Composers Concert” on Monday, October 27, 2014 during the NAfME National Conference in Nashville, TN.
Students and teachers from the Family & Consumer Science Dept. (PHS, OMS, SMS) and National Honor Society sewed more than 70 dresses from pillowcases for the Touching Lives Ministry and will send the items to Kenyan children.
Springhouse Middle School is the first school in the Central East Region to ever represent the State of Pennsylvania in the National Science Olympiad in its 30 year history. The team will be holding the Parkland flag and the PA flag at the Parade of States during the opening ceremony. The State of Pennsylvania fields a total of 319 teams and Springhouse came in second. The Science Olympiad Competition tests the students through a battery of written tests and projects in 23 different science subjects; for which the students prepare regularly over a period of nine months in order to win.
The PHS Leo Club is selling rubber ducks for a Duck Race on May 18th in the Jordan Creek at Wehr’s Dam. All proceeds will benefit Chis Hristofas, a custodian who worked in various buildings throughout PSD and is battling cancer. Ducks are $10 each or buy 10 get one free. First prize is $1000, 2nd is $200, 3rd is $100 and the last duck wins $50. You need not be present to win! Please help us beat these cancers! Buy-a-duck today!
