Avery Moments

Dear Avery Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful vacation! We have a very busy 7 weeks ahead. We are bringing back some Avery favorites such as the Cultural Evening and the Field Day and Family Cookout. It is so nice to see some normalcy return. Please take some time to look over the lengthy list of dates and events so you do not miss anything!

Over the past month we have had some very memorable enrichment opportunities. The fifth grade enjoyed a day of painting with Bren Bataclan and grades 1-4 enjoyed a performance by Veronica Robles and a Mariachi Band. Thank you to the Avery PTO and Dedham Education Foundation for funding these opportunities.

Congratulations to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students for working so hard on the ELA MCAS. We will be starting the Math MCAS next week. Please make sure your child gets a good night sleep and breakfast before their days of testing.

Gr. 5 Math- Wednesday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 11

Gr. 5 Science- Tuesday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 18

In the next week you will be getting a letter seeking input on student placement for next year. As always, teacher requests cannot be honored, however information about your child's learning style and temperament are considered when placing students. Class placements will be coming home in August.

Avery PTO

The Avery PTO is seeking donations of baked goods for teacher appreciation week next week. Please see the flyer attached below. Also, please take a look at the April PTO meeting notes. The next meeting will be May 3rd. There are several open officer positions for next year: 5th Grade Liaisons, Secretary, Co-Treasurer, Co-President. Please consider nominating yourself or someone else for one of the positions.

Library News - Mrs. Garland

We are participating in the Dedham Book Feast: Bridging Cultures and Building Community with the Common Language of Food. This week we are reading a delicious poetry book and exploring food around the world. Soon we will be deciding which foods would be worthy of eating all the time and we will be creating our own food trucks. Follow our adventure here https://wakelet.com/@AveryLibrary.

Dedham Public Schools Summer Programming

Dedham Public Schools are excited to open registration for some great enrichment programming this summer! Students will discover plenty of unique opportunities to nurture curiosity, friendship, and creativity through a multitude of offerings and experiences from July 5 through July 29. With a wide variety of topics and activities, there’s a chance for every child to dive into new subjects, like Eco-Explorers, enhance English Language proficiency, or learn new skills and uncover new interests at the Avery Institute, in a positive and engaging learning environment. Each day is full of fun and discovery, led by experienced faculty who share their expertise in one or a variety of offerings. All programs for students grades K - 5 are offered at Avery Elementary School this summer.

For our 5th grade friends who are moving on to DMS - make sure you check out the TREK program - a summer transition program for students moving up from elementary school to Dedham Middle School. There is also a NEW Middle School level EcoExplorers program this year.

Veronica Robles and Her Mariachi Band

Thank you to the Avery PTO and a grant from the Dedham Education Foundation, students in grades 1-4 enjoyed a performance by Veronica Robles and her Mariachi Band from the Young Audiences of Massachusetts . The students learned enjoyed an array of vibrant costumes and rousing dances. They learned about Aztec and Mexican culture, participated in some songs and dances.

Full Day Workshop with Bren Bataclan

Thanks to a grant from the Dedham Education Foundation, requested by the Art teachers Kristin Prata and Sarah Altone, Avery 5th grade students spent a day with artist, Bren Bataclan planning and then painting their own acrylic-based designs. Bren's "Pay-It-Forward"presentation encouraged the students to share their creation with another person.
