Curriculum Directors' Newsletter
January 2015
"It is going to be o.k.---really!"
It is up to us as leaders in our districts to inform our principals and teachers, but in a hopeful and collaborative way. Let's make sure we are modeling a positive attitude, putting teaching and learning first and working with them to figure out what can weigh our principals down (schedules, etc...).
Set a good tone for a positive attitude in the midst of change.
Update on Teacher Evaluation....Where are we? (from Barb Ruga's Presentation 1/13/15)
Things You Absolutely Need to Know about Teacher Evaluation:
- If nothing happens, with HB or SB, teacher growth would be 50% of Teacher Evaluation
- The Delayed Bill exempted districts from using the HE "opt out" status this year only
Tenure Act Remains the Same:
- Comply with 1249
- IDP for all probationary teachers and for tenured teachers rated ME or IE
- IDP must be developed in consultation with the teacher
- IDP "shall" require progress within a specified period of time not to exceed 180 calendar days
- Final evaluation=multiple observations and must assess progress on IDP goals
2013-2014 Requirements:
- Annual Evaluation Rating (4)-developed with involvement of teachers
- IDP if rated ME or IE 12-13 and for each probationary T, developed in consultation with the teacher
- Multiple observations (review lesson plan, standard and engagement)
- Mid-Year Progress Report
- 25% weight for student growth
- Final evaluation must assess progress towards IDP goals
- IDP for 14-15 to be developed at 3-14 year end
2014-2015 Requirements:
- Annual Evaluation
- Four Multiple Rating Categories
- Student Growth as a Significant Part
- Satisfy Tenure Requirements
- Most of 2013-2014 "component" requirements deferred to 2015-2016
2015-2016 Requirements: (if no other laws are adopted)
- If teacher is rated HE 3 consecutive years, may evaluate every other year instead of annually, provided T maintains HE rating
- If rated E or HE for two years, only one observation is needed
Teacher rated ineffective may appeal to Superintendent within 20 calendar days of receipt of rating
Districts must notify parents when students are assigned to teachers rated IE for two consecutive years in a row
50% student growth using state mandated measures
All the prior 2013-2014 requirements and options are reinstated including:
- Mid-Year Progress Reporting
- Classroom Observation parameters to review lesson plan, engagement and link standard
- IDP at end of year for following year
- Same Tenure Act requirements as above

Guiding Young Mathematicians in Small-Group Meetings
On Saturday, March 14, 8:00 AM-3:00 PM, we will welcome Kassia Omohundro Wedekind to Genesee County for the first time! Kassia uses small-group instruction as the centerpiece of her math workshop approach, engaging all students in rigorous "math exchanges." She shows teachers how to guide conversations with small groups of students, mediate talk and thinking, discuss how math works, and move toward more effective approaches and greater mathematical understanding.
