Medlock Bridge Mustang Message
We educate and inspire all students to be lifelong learners!
January 27, 2019
From the Principal's Desk
Medlock Bridge Community,
Thank you for attending our recent Heritage Night! This event creates a beautiful opportunity to highlight our vibrant, diverse community. What a gift it is for our students to see and experience the cultures of our Medlock Bridge families. Our talented students performed flawlessly! Thank you to our many PTO volunteers and families who made the event a success.
Georgia Parent Survey
Some positive changes have been made to the Georgia Milestones Testing window. The schedule allows for a full week of instruction after students return from Spring Break and reduces daily testing time. The county is also required to use a new caching system this year, and the system's need for schools to limit device traffic necessitated these changes in schedule. The testing dates for each grade level are listed here:
3rd Grade: April 15-19
4th Grade: May 6-10
5th Grade: April 15-23
A more complete calendar will be sent out closer to the date of the test.
Medlock Bridge will be electing representatives to serve on the School Governance Council. We will be electing parent/guardian positions and teacher positions for our spring election. Our School Governance Council has a leadership role in the governance of the school. The Council works with the principal in setting the long-term vision and strategy for the school. They are responsible for approving the school’s strategic plan and budget recommendations, as well as designing innovative solutions to increase academic achievement and meet the unique needs of our school community.
Elections for the parent/guardian and teacher positions on the School Governance Council will be held March 11th – March 18th. Candidates interested in running for an elected position on the Council must complete a candidate declaration form and submit by February 20th.
Candidate forms may be submitted electronically or by mail (get a copy of the form from the school’s front office and follow mailing instructions on the back of the form).
Please click the image to download the SGC Candidate guide.
Finally, we are continuing to recognize students for their progress on our Saddle UP! mural. Students are recognized by their teachers for making progress in a number of areas. When students are recognized, they get to sign the Saddle Up! mural and we make a special call home to share about their progress with parents. Many more students will be recognized this week!
Your Proud Principal,
Matt Vance

Change of Dismissal Procedures
The school day ends at 2:20 p.m. Please avoid early checkouts as instruction goes on until 2:15. However, if your child must be checked out early, your child should be checked out before 2:00 p.m. After 2:00, students will be sent home using normal dismissal procedures so as not to interfere with the school-wide dismissal process.
Any student leaving before the regular dismissal time may only be signed out through the office by a custodial parent. If someone other than the custodial parent is signing out the student, the dismissal note must state the name of the person checking out the student.
All dismissal changes must be in writing. Send a note with your child in the morning on the day of the change of dismissal. No changes will be accepted through email or phone call. Faxes will be accepted only in case of an emergency and with notification to the front office (470-254-2980). Faxes will require a photo id along with the request and must be received by 1:00 pm.
Be prepared to show your photo identification when checking out students through the office.
Media Center News
Do you have a 4th or 5th grader looking for a leadership position? Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Gokhale are looking for a few more students to help in the morning and afternoon as media center helpers. If interested, please come get an application from the media center. Students will be notified with a letter if they are selected to help.
Think First Stay Stafe at MBES, February, 2019
We all share a common and critical goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. In support of this goal, elementary school teachers and counselors will soon present annual lessons to students designed to increase their personal safety and protection. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, classroom posters, role-plays and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from harassment, abduction, bullying, exploitation, and various forms of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional). The Health Advisory Committee reviewed and approved this program and selected components will be implemented through the elementary health curriculum by teachers and schools counselors.
Ms. Taylor will be going into individual classrooms during the month of February to deliver the curriculum. Opt-out forms were sent home via Tuesday paper folders. Only return the form if you DO NOT want your child to participate by Friday, 2/1/19.
Student Council Sells Candy-Grams
Want to surprise a friend, teacher or 'special someone' with a Valentine's Day candy-gram?
If the answer is "yes", be sure to purchase one from February 4th - 13th from the Student Council.
Candy-grams can be purchases for $1.00 in room 131 from 7:10 - 7:35.
Parents please send in a note with the grade and the name of the person receiving the candy-gram.
Curriculum Matters
Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition - Last Call for Entries!
Entries are still being accepted until February 1st for the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition! Please forward all entries to Patty Neumeister, MBES CST.
Unlike many writing competitions, the YGA Writing Competition does not provide a prompt or provide any other boundaries to their choice of genre & creativity other than a 1,900 word limitation and that all work (including revising & editing) be the student's own.
Entries may include:
- Short Stories
- Poetry
- Essays/Literary Criticism/Analysis
- Journalism
- Academic/Research Reports
- Personal Narratives
- Any Other Original Student Writing
All entries must be typed or hand-written on 8.5x11 inch paper (exceptions are made for grades K and 1). Print on one side of the paper only.
Again, the maximum length of original work is limited to 1,900 words or less. If typed, the font must be no smaller than 12 point and the writing must be double-spaced.

The original work and a copy must NOT have the name of the student and school listed (student and school name will be listed on the Entry Form explained below). Rather, record the student's initials, grade and RESA district number (our RESA # is 4) at the top and center of each page of the original.
