7th grade

Off and Running!

We are off to a great start on the Explorer team! Students all have their AVID binder and we are working on keeping things clean and organized. Students are in the process of learning the schedule and routines.

We've been in school for 4 weeks now, don't forget to check your child's grades on PowerSchool. Mid-term progress reports will be coming out in the next week or so.

There was a mix up on the link to sign up for Parent-Teacher conferences and the problem has been fixed. Please make sure you click on the link below to sign up for P/T Conferences. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Meet the Explorer Teachers

Ms. Karen Salsbury (ELA)

As a 10-year veteran to teaching, Ms. Salsbury returned to teaching 5 years ago after a successful business career. Completing her Master’s in Education/Reading 3 years ago, her love of teaching literacy became the cornerstone of her return. She is an avid reader, loves her time in the classroom, travel and enjoys spending time at one of Kansas City’s local festivals, museums and attractions.

Mrs. Patty Steyer (Science)

Mrs. Steyer is in her fifteenth year of teaching. She has taught Science and Honors Science taught at Eastgate for 5 years. She has taught English Language Arts and Math at the Middle School Level, third and fifth grade at the elementary level. She strives to develop a curiosity about the world in students then answer questions with physical laws of the universe.

Mr. Kurt Koenig (Social Studies)

Grew up on Saint Joseph Missouri. Attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. Graduated with a BS Ed. Secondary Social Science. I student taught and worked for two years at North Kansas City High School. This my seventh year at Eastgate Middle School.

Mrs. Amy Fiene (Math)

I am so excited to be a part of the Explorer team this year. I have been teaching math for 12 years. This is my 4th year at Eastgate. I got my undergraduate degree in education from the University of Central Missouri and my graduate degree in middle school curriculum & instruction from Drury University. I've been married for almost 20 years and have two wonderful sons, Trent & Tanner.

What's Going On in Class

English Language Arts (ELA)

LT: I can analyze plot (the events that happen) to determine a theme (the author’s overall message.) Elements of plot, such as foreshadowing, struggle, theme, setting, etc. Homework: Students should be reading their book reflection books 5 nights a week for 30 minutes each. These are due October 14.


In Science we are reviewing the scientific method, learning what a control group and an experimental group is, and using our science flex books to continue our study of energy. Students will be creating vocabulary cards as a study tool for use at home. They should also be reviewing notes in the Interactive Science Notebook on potential and kinetic energy.

Social Studies

This week social studies will be finishing up the map skills unit. In class we will be reviewing for the test on Friday. Students will be completing a Create-A-Country assignment where they create a map for a country they invent.

Homework: Study Cornell notes for test.


7th Grade Math

Monday - Quiz over Topic A (Lessons 1-9)

Tuesday - I-Ready Testing

Wednesday - I-Ready Testing

Thursday -Understanding Multiplication of Integers

Friday - Developing Rules for Multiplying Signed Numbers

**Student homework will be the Problem Set at the end of each lesson, which can be found in the student's packet, that is kept in their binder.**

Honor's Math

Monday - Reteaching over integer operations to solve real-world problems.

Tuesday - i-Ready Testing

Wednesday - i-Ready Testing - (we will be re-assessing Module 2)

Thursday -Rational Numbers and Decimals - Homework: 3.1 Independent Practice

Friday - Adding Rational Numbers - Homework: 3.2 Independent Practice

**Homework-will be anything that was not completed during the class period.**
