EL's Kindergarten Summer Program
Incoming Kindergarteners for SY 2019-2020
Fun at the EL Summer Program for new Kindergarteners.
The 2-week summer program for new English Learners attending Kindergarten at Jefferson Elementary School in SY 2019-2020 started on Monday, July 8 and ended on Friday, July 19. Twelve students were enrolled and enjoyed meeting their new classmates and making friends, as well as meeting with their EL teachers, Ms. Lenny and Mrs. Dumas who led the program. Their weeks were filled with fun learning experiences like choral reading of the Read Well's alphabet cheers, reading the first 4 Level 1 books of the ZipZoom program, writing sentences and sang the spelling adjectives words like HAPPY, TIRED and SMART, learning to play safely on the playground, logging onto the computer independently, and learning rhymes and songs. The students also studied what living things need to survive, went on a scavenger hunt to find examples of living and non living things and charting them. They also worked on identifying parts of plants, labeling them and determining their functions. They also folded origami cranes and identified shapes as they folded. Ms. Song, EL PTT, surprised the students on Friday when she stopped by to say hello. It was an enjoyable 2 weeks with our children and their families. We also went to the zoo, compliments of Ms. Leilani Riahi's grandma and Mr. Paul Dumas. Thank you to Cedric, Aki and MIchi, the parents who volunteered to chaperone the trip to the zoo. We also want to thank Cedric and Mabele Castellano for the teachers' lunch and the cupcakes on the last day of our program. We are so blessed to have all of you.
Learning to Play Safely.
The children quickly learned that if they spin too long, they will become dizzy and eventually fall. They also learned that if they are too close and they fall, they will get hurt, or hurt someone else. As a result, they learned to space themselves out and to yell, "Stop!" before they start to fall, or if they want to get on or off the equipment..
Learning to Use the Computers
The children learned to independently log on and off the computer to access starfall.com. After about a week, 50% were successful, and could help their peers who are struggling.
Studying Living and Non Living Things with Ms. Lenny.
Students went on a scavenger hunt to find 5 items to put in their brown paper bags. In the classroom they labeled each item and determined if they came from a living or non living thing. They also grouped their items and graphed them to visually see which has more/less.
On the Farm at the Keiki Zoo
Farmer Saki had a farm. E-i-e-i-o. And on her farm she had a brown cow Adam. E-i-e-i-o. With a moo-moo here, and a moo-moo there. Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo. Farmer Saki had a farm. E-i-e-i-o.
Daily Journalling
Journaling daily is not an easy task, but we had fun, especially with a whole box of markers, or crayons to use. Each day, the children were asked to write their favorite thing to do, food to eat, favorite animal, etc., and draw a picture to match.
Creative use of Magnetic Alphabet
If you look closely, you'll see a person at the very top of the bridge. Luckily the bridge didn't fall.
Z is for Zebra
Who has black and white stripes? A zebra!
The Most Spectacular Penguin Show on Earth
1.2.3. Go get it! And all at once the penguins dive into the water to fetch the fish. They shot right past us under the water and surfaced when they had caught their treat.
Magnificent Elephants
The elephants were so close, if they had wanted to touch us with their trunks, they could have. It was an amazing up close view of them. As they stared at us, we closely observed them, and I think it ended up with a "dare to see who would blink first" contest.
