Eagle Update: March 5, 2021
Barton Hills Elementary
Hello BHE Families:
Happy March! This will be a pretty short newsletter since last week's had so much information! As you likely know by now, AISD has sent out communication regarding Governor Abbott's lifting of the statewide mask mandate and what that means for AISD campuses. Austin ISD will continue to require all students, staff, and visitors to wear masks on district property and at district events. Thank you so much for your help and cooperation - we are all working together to support our students and ensure their health and safety.

BHE & PTA Book Club!
Welcome to the (Book) Club!
Barton Hills is committed to leading the conversation on race and inequality and believe that it is all of our responsibilities to be relentless in recognizing and fighting against racial inequities and injustice. In an effort to continue our education, the PTA and the school administration are hosting TWO school-wide book discussions for everyone to join and contribute.
We will begin with an adult book club where we will delve into “How to be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi, who is a professor at Boston University and the author of six books on antiracism and Black history. Kendi says that “being an antiracist requires persistent self-awareness, constant self-criticism, and regular self-examination.”
Free copies are available to the first 20 people who register but there are no limits to the number of people who can join. Please email bartonhillspta@gmail.com with your name to register and if applicable, we will arrange for you to pick up your book asap. We are extending our book club discussion one more week due to the winter storm delay. Please save the date: March 31 at 7pm. Zoom details to come.
After Spring Break, Mrs. Achtermann and Mrs. White, our school counselor, will continue our journey with Mr. Kendi’s “Antiracist Baby.” This book will be distributed to ALL BHE families and will introduce young readers and their grown-ups to the concept and power of antiracism. The book provides the language necessary to begin critical conversations at an early age, which Barton Hills will continue through one or two community Zoom meetings. Please look out for more information on this family program as the date approaches.

Six Things White Kids Say About Race That Parents Should Call Out Now
At the end of March, our school will do a community-wide book study on Anti-Racist Baby by Ibram X. Kendi. This book "introduces the youngest readers and the grown-ups in their lives to the concept and power of antiracism. Providing the language necessary to begin critical conversations at the earliest age, Antiracist Baby is the perfect book for readers of all ages dedicated to forming a just society."
Each family at Barton Hills will receive a copy of the book after spring break. Details about book pick-up will be sent out soon.

‘Antiracist Baby’ helps kids and adults learn – Harvard Gazette Antiracism scholar Ibram X. Kendi doesn’t believe it’s possible to be “not racist.” The award-winning author, director of Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research, and the 2020/2021 Frances B. Cashin Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study said during a recent TED interview that “the heartbeat of racism itself has always been denial, and the sound of that ... news.harvard.edu
