Cougar Cub Nation!

Happy Friday, Cougar Family!
Principal's Message
Greetings Cougar Nation!
This week, we sent out progress reports and Istation reports for your review. Please be sure to sign and return them to teachers and schedule a meeting with them. Our Kinder and First Grade teachers hosted a brief meeting last night. Thank you for attending and showing your support. We are hosting afternoon tutorials Monday - Thursday each week. Tomorrow we will have our next Saturday Academy from 9-12 pm. As a reminder we will be celebrating our 100th day of school on Monday, January 30, 2023 with each grade level choosing a color.
I ask that you access the Istation Platform as a parent and have your child login in at home to monitor their progress. You can find the link on our TGE homepage and A+ Parent / Student Portal or click on the button "Istation '' included in the S'more to log in. Our parental engagement can also assist you with gaining access.
I will continue to invite our parents to campus to assist with their children's academics, behavior and to volunteer as needed. We are in the process of completing our TGE Parental Volunteer Center! Contact Ms. A. Vega, SMISD Parental Engagement Specialist at 956-565-6308 or email at anavega@smisd.net for opportunities to help on our campus. There is a process we ask that you follow for these opportunities, and we look forward to seeing you here.
Please note, our campus opens at 7:00 am to our students and staff. Do not drop off your child before then as we may not have personnel on campus at that time. School begins at 7:45 am, with your child being given a nutritious breakfast in the classroom and our day ends at 3:30 pm. We ask that your child stay through the entire day. Attendance is a critical part of your child's commitment to academic excellence, and we appreciate your commitment.
Keep in mind that our children's attendance is important. However, if your child is exhibiting any flu-like system, keep them home, contact our front office and reach out to your child's teacher through Class Dojo for work. You can come by and pick them up.
Warmest regards,
Principal Camacho

Gifted and Talented Program
The last day to turn in parent nomination letters for consideration in the gifted and talented program was on January 26, 2023. Now, a committee will review the parental and teacher nomination and start the identification process for G/T program. A letter will be sent home once the committee has met notifying you and your child of their status in the process.
My child was nominated for the gifted and talented program, now what is the next step?
There is a three step process with gifted and talented program. The next step is the screening process. Now, students will have take a series of assessments to help identify if they are eligible to be part of the G/T program.
Gifted and Talented traits
Click on the following photographs to see the traits that gifted and talented students exhibit. You can also click on the buttons to visit the National Association for Gifted Children website to find out more information about the Gifted and Talented program.
Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves a difficulty in learning how to read, write, or spell despite the instruction, the knowledge, and the sociocultural factors. Characteristics of dyslexia are: difficulty reading words in isolation, difficulty in accurately decoding unfamiliar words, difficulty with oral reading, and difficulty spelling. If you suspect your child may have dyslexia, you can contact your child's teacher or campus councilor.
Special Education Program
The special education program, which serves students with mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral disabilities, is designed to help students reach their academic goals. At TGE, special education teachers work as a team with regular education teachers to ensure that each student enrolled in the program meets state expectations. Students, who meet criteria, will receive accommodations such as in class support, extra time to finish assignments, and many others. The special education program’s goal is to meet the unique needs of a child with disabilities. We currently have three settings which include inclusion, life skills, and resource class. If you suspect that your child may have a disability impeding their learning and may benefit from the special education program, please contact your child’s campus and request information.
