Mrs. James' Class News

The December Edition

It's December!!

I cannot believe that we are in December. This school year is flying by! We have a pretty busy month with lots of fun activities.

Last Friday, our class had a very special opportunity to write songs during our Language Arts block. Ms. Hall (former Brownsville teacher) worked with the students on writing winter songs. She is planning to come back before break to finish the project. She was so excited about how well behaved the students were and how well they worked together.

I cannot wait to see my students along with Mr. Humphrey's students and Mrs. Greenwood's students perform on Tuesday. I have only seen very small bits and pieces so far, so I am excited to see the full performance. The daytime show is at 1:20. The evening show is at 6:00. Please have your child at Brownsville at 5:45. They can meet me in the room and we will all walk down together. Also, after the performance, please pick your child up from my room. That will help cut down on the congestion in the music room. If you still have questions about anything having to with the show, please contact Ms. Jones at bjones@k12albemarle.org.

Please remember as the temperature gets colder to send you child with a coat, gloves, etc. Also, if your child comes in shorts and the temperature is below 40, our policy is that they will stay inside. If they wear shorts, please have them also bring pants to change into.

If I don't see you before the winter break, I hope that you and your family enjoy a wonderful holiday season!

Report Cards, Grades, and the Parent Portal

As you know our report cards for first quarter were viewed through the Parent Portal and requested paper copies were sent home. As we work through the 2nd quarter, you will be able to see grades that are posted along with current averages. Please know the grade book we use is a LIVE document and grades/averages are constantly changing and are not "set in stone." Please be assured that if I become the least bit concerned about your child's grades, I will contact you. As always, I am here to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.

Reading

We are finishing up our mini-unit on mysteries. The students have been loving the Encyclopedia Brown books that they have been reading. They really enjoy trying to figure out the solution and they enjoy talking about the cases with classmates.

After break, I plan on starting Wonder as a novel study. If you haven't read it, it is a wonderful book that is written from different perspectives. It is based around the main character, August, who has a facial difference, which has prevented him from going to school up until this point. I think the kids will really enjoy this.

Virginia Studies VS 6

The test will be Thursday, December 17th. A study guide will be coming home soon. It covers a few important documents and a few important Virginians. This unit also covers the Westward Expansion.
