Prohibition

The Background

The 18th amendment did nit prohibit the consumption of alcohol but rather simply the sale manufacture and transportation of alcoholic beverages a result from the temperance movement the concept of prohibition had already been implemented by many states prior to ratification of the eighteenth amendment so then the 18th amendment was quickly ratified

Passed January 16, 1919 Repealed December 5, 1933

Why its no longer in effect

B/c it wasn't working because all the social and economic benefits that had been claimed for it had the opposite effect and was highly unpopular
