Celebrating Success within the Guided Program
Each month, a school features a program or event that involves its students and staff. Dr. Gina Finaldi, Director of Student Services, shared information about the Guided Program, which is designed for students with diverse learning needs. These students require a curriculum focused on functional academic skills, social communication, independent living skills, prevocational skills, self care, and self management. She shared a snapshot of the program through a video. Dr. Finaldi shared with the Board the history of the program, how three school districts oversee its operation today as part of an intergovernmental agreement, and possible future outcomes of the program. Since the program’s inception at Daniel Wright 11 years ago, the program educates on average nine students a year at the junior high. Aptakisic-Tripp Community Consolidated School District 102 and Kildeer Countryside Community Consolidated School District 96 take part in educating our younger students. All three Districts are reviewing the program to improve services for students and next steps will be shared at a future board meeting.
Policy Updates
The Board reviewed proposed changes to Board policies that have been updated due to changes in the law. The Board will take action on adopting the revised policies at the February Regular Board meeting.
Teacher Institute Day
On Monday, January 9, during the institute day, certified staff members participated in a workshop on student inquiry presented by Trevor MacKenzie and Jessica Vance. The two authors shared different instructional strategies to increase student agency in the classroom. In the afternoon, they participated in building, grade level, and content team meetings aligning curriculum and articulating student needs. The trainings on student inquiry and student agency are aligned to the district’s strategic plan and Portrait of a Graduate competencies of critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability.
Summer School Update
Summer school planning is underway! A communication will be sent to families in February regarding the course offerings.
Schoology
The Board received an update on the Schoology pilot program. Dr. Craig Chatham, Director of Technology and Assessment, will meet with teachers at Daniel Wright to discuss Schoology's pros and cons, and what direction to go with the gradebook and the overall Schoology learning management system. Dr. Chatham will update the Board at a future meeting on the results of the pilot program.
Teacher Conferencing
February conferences and conference sign up will be held in the same manner as November conferences through the use of the PTC Wizard for Half Day and Daniel Wright families. Sprague teachers will schedule their own conferences with families. Conferences will take place via Zoom. Dr. Chatham is reviewing other conferencing platforms as potential options for the future. He will make a report to the Board at a future meeting.
Job Fair
The District will hold a job fair on Thursday, February 9, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the District Office, 111 Barclay Boulevard, Lincolnshire, said Dr. Scott Warren, Superintendent, in his update to the Board.
