Early Kingdoms
Syria is an ancient land with a rich cultural heritage. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities is Aleppo. Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited capitals.
The Muslim Conquest
Christianity was strong in Syria until the Muslim Conquest in AD 634.The first Muslim empire, the Umayyad, ruled the expanding Islamic islands until 750. Egypt controlled the region at times until the Ottoman Empire conquered it.
