THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 16
Dear Roberts,
What do marketers do to persuade or nudge you into buying what they are selling? You walk into a Apple store, you find a phone you like; there is music in the background, the phone vibrates, the internet is intentionally turned on, and it has various ring tones. Marketing giants create experiences that activates all five of our scences. Even car salesman do their best level for you to come and test drive a car before they even talk to you about a price. There is something about the feel and smell of a brand new car when you are buying a new car. Again, the marketing behind this strategy is to activate all of your scences. We can learn so much from the business world. They engage and hook us in their story!
How do you become a multi-sensory learner? You may be asking, “What is a multi-sensory learner? Multi-sensory learning is the idea that individuals learn better if you were taught using more than one of your senses. Appealing to several senses makes learning stickier! There are three preferred styles of learning, which are visual, auditory, and kinetically. How do we activate this in your classroom?
I will give you an example of what I am talking about with how to learn vocabulary words using multi-sensory.
Step 1: Turn the word you want to learn into a picture.
Step 2: Turn the definition into a “sound-a-like” picture.
Step 3: Connect the pictures in a memorable story.
Example 1: Extol.
- Extol means to praise.
- Extol sounds like “eggs toll,” so imagine that you’re going through a tollbooth and you pay with eggs. After you pay, the tollbooth attendants praise you by applauding.
Example 2: Polemic
- Polemic means to argue.
- Polemic looks like “pole mic,” so maybe you’re using the microphone to argue.
Hector Dell Rio, our 5th math teacher does an amazing job in how he incorporates auditory and kinetically into his math lesson cycle. I attached a video of how he makes learning sticky. There are other RMS Teachers that do so many other versions of activating all scences to make learning sticky. What can you do in your classroom to incorporate various learning styles?
This past week, a substitute came to my office to let me know that she has never been to a school where the teachers talk to subs. She then explained that not just one teacher, but several came to see how they can support her with classroom instruction and techniques. Yes, I said instructional, not for classroom management. I explained to her that schools like us, model the way. I was able to tell her that our tribe of teachers come to work for a greater purpose than just to teach. Thank you for being the definition of extraordinary and empathetic love.

Roberts Giving Tree
This holiday season our campus will sponsor 15 families. All families on our giving tree are RMS students and their siblings. These families are all considered McKinney-Vento or have a low socio-economic status.
How you can support:
· Sign-up to sponsor a family using the google link: https://tinyurl.com/yb7ezf3n
· Teachers can request coin donations from students to raise funds for items they would like to sponsor as a class.
· As families are sponsored an ornament with your name will be placed on the tree in the cafeteria.
· All donations are due by December 14th.
· Collection bins are located in the library. Please attach the family’s number to your donation.
Sincerely,
DeRonda Pitre
T-TESS 2.1 Achieving Expectations
As we walked through your classrooms focusing on classroom environment, routines and procedures, we have many celebrations and are proud of the solid foundation you have built in your classrooms to begin working towards our instructional focus. Productive classroom environments, routines and procedures do not happen by accident and your effort does not go unnoticed. Continue to deliberately practice and revisit expectations and make adjustments as necessary.
Beginning Wednesday, as we walk through your classrooms we will be focused on T-TESS Dimension 2.1: Achieving Expectations (The teacher supports all learners in their pursuit of high levels of academic and social-emotional success), another step in personalizing small group instruction. As you work towards our instructional focus, you must establish a learning environment that supports and motivates students to do their personal best.
Listed below are examples of evidence of Achieving Expectations.
High Expectations Set
- Sets academic expectations that challenge all students
- Posts academic expectations and communicates academic expectations to students
- Maximizes instructional time by facilitating bell-to-bell instruction
- Reinforces desired academic and social-emotional behavior
Students Demonstrate Mastery
- Persists with lesson until there is evidence that students demonstrate mastery
- Checks for understanding via informal assessment throughout lesson
- Offers retest opportunities to allow students to demonstrate mastery and reflects mastery in Gradespeed
- Provides extensions for students who demonstrate mastery
Address Student Mistakes
- Recognizes and addresses student mistakes
- Provides immediate feedback and reteaches in a timely manner
- Embraces student mistakes as an opportunity for growth
Provides Students Initiative Opportunities
- Provides students opportunities to take initiative of their own learning and self-monitor
- Encourages students to take initiative of their own learning by attending RMS Tutoring
- Enables students to set goals and monitor their progress
