Discussions
This week features more best practices for utilizing discussion boards. We called in the experts (department chairs and mentors) to provide cross-curricular ideas and suggestions. Thanks for everyone who participated.
What is one way you have modified an existing discussion?
Carrie Madden
I pin helpful resources to the top of many discussions that include pictures, infographics, short podcasts, videos or widgets.
Doug Curtright
I have attempted to steer the discussion towards a current event that somehow relates to the original topic.
Amanda Teixeira
Students can submit via audio source, personal pictures and add text, and postcards.
What is one way you've used the discussion board, other than in normal discussions?
Joyce Bearden
I have created a discussion board to preview sample National Latin Exam questions each week.
Iara Reynolds
A place for students to post their general questions. They can also respond to each others questions-kind of like peer tutoring.
David Alexander
Students have conducted debates on discussion boards about a certain topic.
What is one grading tip you have for discussion boards?
Stephanie Arrington
Grade them everyday so you don't get overwhelmed and you can keep up with the students conversations.
Shane Miller
Try to make sure the students follow the policy and respond to other students in a meaningful way.
Kelly Gardner
I grade harder on the initial post than the replies. I look at the initial one first, and then replies after.
