Stockbridge School District News for Dec. 20th-Jan. 2nd
Time To Shine!
In this section of our newsletter you will find all of the wonderful academic work that the students and staff of Stockbridge are completing. From ACT testing in the High School to classroom projects in our Elementary School! This publication will be sent out twice a month to give a great snap shot into what is happening in the Stockbridge School District. Please feel free to share this with all your friends and families to help showcase our wonderful school district!
Elementary School
- This week Mrs. Rohloff's class has been busy practicing for the upcoming holiday concert and fine tuning their voices for their one of a kind performance! Within the classroom Mrs. Rohloff has had her students working on the wonderful world of measurement and how to use different tools to measure length! During their writing time they have worked on growing their abilities as writers through the area of fictional narratives! And, as a special treat the 2nd graders had a visit from Officer Lemieux, to help them understand more about firearm safety.
- This week Ms. Kozic had her first graders doing a variety of activities with candy canes. In Math they used candy canes sticks and gumdrops to represent a double digit number. They read about the history of the candy cane and listened to the story "Katie the Candy Cane Fairy." To finish the week the students enjoyed eating a candy cane as they watched a video on how candy canes are made.
- In 5th grade Mrs. Schnuell has the kiddos finishing up their colony "pillow" projects and informational papers. In math they are working hard with adding and subtracting fractions. In reading they are over halfway done with the book A Boy Called Bat. As they read they are learning about being kind and understanding to others.
Middle School
- Mr. Schoening is our Pk-12 PHY Ed teacher and in the middle school he is finishing up the Fitness Unit using the Fitness Rooms. Every other day they do 5 different exercises that work their pushing muscles, pulling muscles, leg muscles, core muscles and they would do an activity that stressed their cardio system. As the seasons change and the weather gets colder Mr. Schoening is working on starting a Floor Hockey Unit with the hopes that they could some day have an outdoor ice hockey rink here in Stockbridge! Keep up the great work Middle School Students!
- The Middle School and High School Band have been practicing tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming winter concert on Dec. 21st. We invite you to come enjoy the warm sounds of our wonderful band!
- Ms. Gilsdorf is working hard with our Middle School students to finish up all of our class novels, demonstrating their understanding by taking a unit test, and starting on projects related to the novels they read. In 7th grade the students will be having a tea party on Wednesday like they do during their novel Chains. When they all come back from break, we will be watching movie adaptations of our novels. The students are amazed at how different some of the movies are and how some are very similar.
High School
- Mr. Fitzgerald is stretching the thinking of our High School Biology students through a deep dive into the understanding of cell function through their current unit on cell division. Mr. Fitzgerald has his integrated science students in a chemistry unit learning about chemical reactions and the wonderful world of reactants! Finally, in physics the students just started on their concepts of work, energy, and power unit. Wait to hear about the heavy lifting learning that will take place during that unit!
Ms. AR's class has been burning through history and enjoying learning about citizenship which included deep discussions about civil and criminal law, immigration and voting rights. In Ms. AR's current events the student continue to learn and digest the wild world of modern news. The conversations and discussions around local, national and international news is truly eye-opening! At times it makes us truly appreciate the wonderful town we live in!

The Stockbridge School District is excited to offer a virtual nursing opportunity for all families who would like to take advantage of it. This service is designed to help eliminate the need to schedule unnecessary office visits for minor bumps and bruises or that pesky sore throat! Students now can see a Bellin Health nurse through the use of Tyto Care here within the school day and there is no need for time away from the school! The district's main goal for the virtual nurse resource is to have access to a certified medical professional who is available at a moments notice to provide advise and recommendations for medical situations. As with all resources the district provides, this is optional and is not to be considered a full medical examination; this service is very similar to a phone call to nurse direct.

Counselor's Corner
- Many grades are learning about growth mindset and goals and now are looking at emotions and how to handle them during different experiences using the second step curriculum.
- Grades 3 & 4 are working with the Sources of Strength curriculum and are learning about how our brain functions and how to use the sources of strength wheel to help us with our emotions and how we can regulate them.
- Middle school students are working on study habits. The students just started a unit on Bullying and Harassment. They are learning the difference between the two and techniques to use when bullied.
- In all grades Mr. Fischer is integrating our Sources of Strength Wheel as a method to help us when we experience different emotions, the key to success is focusing on all the wonderful "Strenghts" our students have!
- Several high school students are trained as peer leaders in our new program "Sources of Strength," a suicide prevention curriculum that really serves as a program to connect students to trusted adults. They will be meeting to coordinate and implement SOS Campaigns around generosity, trusted adults, positive friendships, family support, mentors, healthy activities, physical and mental health. They expect to have their first campaign started in the beginning of the new year.
