Message from Mr. Burns
Hi Wims Families,
I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend! We had a great Valen-Kind Spirit Week. The students (and staff) always love the spirit days:)
MCPS has released the annual staff, student, and family climate and culture surveys. The surveys are essential for creating inclusive, supportive, and thriving school communities. Please take a moment to fill out the parent survey for Wims. The link for the survey can be reached here: https://parentsurvey.mcpsmd.org/. It requires you to enter your child's student ID number. You can find your child’s MCPS student ID in ParentVue or on their report cards. The survey will be available through March 15th. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know:)

Mark Your Calendars: Grade 5 Promotion
Our 5th grade promotion will be on June 7th at Clarksburg High School. More details to follow.
Grade 2 SIPPI Process
All Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Grade 2 students will be screened as part of the Student Instructional Program Planning and Implementation (SIPPI) process, which is the universal screening for gifted and talented (GT) identification. Additionally, students in Grades 3, 5 and 7 who are new to MCPS, or have not been previously identified as gifted and talented, will participate in the screening process. The screening process considers various academic assessments and behavioral checklists to determine whether a student meets criteria for GT designation. In June, you will receive a letter that includes your student’s GT designation.
Data sources for 2023–2024 include:
Academic Assessments:
- Literacy District Assessment
- Mathematics District Assessment
- Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)-Grade 2 only
- Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Reading & Mathematics
- Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) English/Language Arts & Mathematics-Grade 7 only
Behavioral Checklists:
- Parent Input Form
- Teacher Survey(s)
The SIPPI process is designed to capture data about students’ strengths for gifted and talented identification and to inform instructional planning for the next school year. The gifted and talented identification process is separate from the MCPS elementary and middle school selective magnet processes (i.e., Centers for Enriched Students, Middle School Magnets). The gifted and talented designation is not considered in the selective magnet processes. Gifted and talented designation is one indicator of advanced academic performance and/or potential that is used to inform opportunities for enriched and accelerated instruction at the local school. Our school will monitor additional student data to make informed decisions regarding enrichment and acceleration opportunities, in the core content areas, throughout the school year.
For more information about the specific grade-level criteria used for gifted and talented identification and answers to frequently asked questions, please visit: https://bit.ly/MCPS-GT-23-24

Kids Heart Challenge
Registration for the Kids Heart Challenge is now open! Our community counts on lifesavers like you. Please sign your student up for our Kids Heart Challenge so they can learn how to keep their hearts and brains healthy while raising funds to help kids with special hearts. By completing Finn’s Mission, they’ll also learn the lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR and how to recognize a stroke. You will also earn money for new PE equipment for our school by donating. All donations will be done online; no cash or checks will be accepted at school. Our school goal this year is to raise $14,000. If the goal is reached, those students who donated will get to tape Mr. Smith to the wall with duct tape! To sign up, click the link below!!! If your child is in grades 3-5, please use their block two teacher they go to specials with as the teacher when registering. Donations will be accepted through February 29th. Lastly, the classes in K-2 and 3-5 who raise the most money will get a free choice PE day! Thanks for your support!

From the PTA Board
Dear Families,
We hope that everyone had a wonderful, long weekend and a Valentine’s Day filled with love. The PTA was proud to provide once again goodie bags for all students and a delicious, catered breakfast to our Wonderful Wims Staff! We hope everyone enjoyed the classroom celebrations.
Congratulations again to the 3rd Grade class on winning week 2 of Fun Run fundraising back in October - this past Friday, the PTA supported their afternoon movie reward with popcorn!
Important note to all families that registration for the 2024 S.T.E.A.M. Expo at Wims will close next Sunday, February 25th so that the PTA can begin preparations for the event. If your student is interested in participating - even if they do not yet have a project idea - please be sure to sign them up before next Sunday!
Finally, the yearbook team is hard at work on the yearbook layout – more pictures are needed, especially from Grandparents’ Day as well as morning/ afternoon routines (patrols, kids getting on & off the bus, drop-off, walker area, etc.). Please see the “We Need Your Photos” section below & please be sure to TAG and IDENTIFY the students in your photos. Additionally, the cover contest for the yearbook is NOW OPEN for students in Grades 3-5. Original artwork is due in the front office by March 1. Please see below for details!
