The Interloper mode
The mode of the interlopers are suspenseful and sad.The two quotes that tell us this are,"If only on this wild night, this dark lone spot,he might come across George Znaeym man to man" page152.The other quote that explained the mode is "The roebuck, which usually kept in the sheltered hollows during a storm wind, were running like driven things tonight, and there was movement and unrest among the creatures that were wont to sleep through the dark hours"page 152.
The summary of the Interlopers
"The Interlopers" by Saki is one of bitter irony. The two men, Znayem and von Gradwitz have kept a generations old fued going. The courts tried to settle it, but neither man wanted to make peace, so they plot and pray that misfortune would fall on the other. This literally happens one night as the men come upon each other in the woods. Mother nature takes things into control and blows a tree over pinning them both underneath. They seem to be making amends, but the story ends with both men realizing that the shapes coming down the far hillside are not the men they had been expecting, but wolves instead.
Question
Did Georg Znaeym and Ulrich die at the end of the story? Yes they did because they thought the wolves were their men to come and rescue them but instead of their men, it was the wolves coming to eat them.
The Open Window Mood
The open window mood is scary and hilarious. Two quote that represents the scary part is " Poor Aunt always thinks they'll come back someday, they and the little brown spaniel that was lost with them." "In the deepening twilight three figures were walking noiselessly across the lawn, a tired brown spaniel close at their heels." One quote that represents the hilarious part is " Framton grabbed his stick; the hall door and the gravel drive were dimly noted stages in his headlong retreat."
