Collegewood Chronicles

Developing Minds Nurturing Hearts- October 5, 2020

A Note From Dr. Wendland

Hello, Collegewood Families,

Thank you for attending parent conferences. This time together is so valuable and it allows us to learn more about your child and strengthen the partnership between home and school. During conferences, we received many questions about the re-opening of our school. Please be assured that when there is a confirmed date, I will share those plans with you. We will be moving in alignment with mandates and procedures set forth by the health department and local governing agencies. Small groups of students are being brought back across Los Angeles County with preventive practices in place. Each level of education has different practices and protocols to follow which is why you may be receiving information about sports from the high school level and have to hear from the elementary school. I welcome your questions at any time. Please feel free to contact me via phone or email.

Be safe and Be well,

Dr. Wendland

Parent Symposium

The Parent Symposium was a great success and there was a lot of helpful information in the presentations. I captured a few highlights last week- in case you missed it- Dr. Michelle Borba, psychologist, and author, shared the following ways we can reduce anxiety in ourselves and our children:

    • CARING: Keep our own stress levels down so that we can be champions for our children instead of projecting our own fears and stresses onto our children

    • CONNECTION: connection reduces stress - we can ask our children questions about people we know or characters in a book to help them connect with others and widen their perspective. A couple of questions to consider include: How would you feel if that happened to you, what would you need to feel better

    • COPING: Identify stress signs. Breathe deeply, repeat a positive affirmation, chunk your fear (let's just do one minute, let’s just take one step) Create a calm down kit or corner in your home

    • CHEERFULNESS/OPTIMISM: Look for the helpers. Share the good news. Put empathy into action- how can we help others? Think of a family action project to help a neighbor or people in need

If you were not able to listen in, or if you would like to review any of the information provided, you can access a full recording of the event HERE
