Message from the principal
Thank you for your commitment and dedication to supporting each other and to helping be leaders around our school and community this year. It's been an honor to serve as your principal in this my first year in this role and this your last year at UHS. I appreciate your dedication to your learning, to our teachers, to our school, and to each other, as you've worked not only to meet our expectations but also to go above them is so many ways. Please continue to focus on your passions, give of yourself to others, and make a positive difference for those around you.
We are grateful for you and all of the ways you have led and helped reach our vision, "UHS will change the world!" Continue to lead and make a difference for others.

Important information for Parents of Juniors - Vaccine Requirement
Last year, the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Immunization, issued a new vaccine rule that requires all students entering or transferring into the 12th grade and born after September 15, 1999, show vaccine documentation of two doses of the meningococcal vaccine, or one dose if the vaccine was received when the student was 16 years of age or older.
Meningococcal disease is a very serious, potentially life threatening, disease. The meningococcal vaccine is 85-100 percent effective at preventing infection from the subtypes of meningococcus found in the vaccine.
Please complete this requirement. If you have received a letter or email from Mrs. Ness, UHS School Nurse, your student has not completed the requirement. By law, if the student is not fully immunized for meningitis, they will not be allowed to attend school, sports, and school-related activities starting day 1 of the 2018 – 2019 school year (August 23, 2018).
Please set up an appointment with your healthcare provider for the meningitis vaccine and turn in the updated vaccine record to Mrs. Ness.
Exciting changes to UHS for fall 2018!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS will be rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning. School will still start and end at times is does this year along. We will continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we are creating time in school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students. We are reallocating time from 5th period (currently 11 minutes longer that all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time on those days to create additional time on those days.
Students will largely have choice of where they go during this time, including having intervention for additional learning, extensions of learning, and study table to further learning. There will be no additional homework tied to this time.
Look for additional information in coming weeks. Mrs. Wilson is pictured here with a cross section of students from UHS who came together on April 26th to provide some initial feedback about different aspects of this new opportunity.
