The Truth Behind SHARKS
BY : ABIGAIL JOLIE GARN
We've seen the movies. We've heard the legends. They haunt us in our sleep. It's the horrible, terrifying,... SHARKS. But what's the truth behind these incredible creatures? 'Tis the topic of the day.
THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF SHARKS
People fear sharks because of appearances, lifestyle, and reported attacks. I mean, whats to like about their sharp teeth and hunting habits? But you really only have a 1 in 37,48,067 % chance of getting attacked by a shark and only 4 or 5 are really dangerous to humans. The rest are mostly "gentle giants." Shark attacks only happen because of mistaken identity. The splashing of limbs and shiny object are mistaken for injured fish. When people lie down on surf boards, the shape and outlining look like seals to them. Both are easy prey. When attacks do happen, it usually stops when the shark realizes its not a fish.
What We Think Of Sharks
What Sharks Are Realy Like
What Can Be Done With Sharks
WHERE SHARKS LIVE
Sharks live in oceans, lakes, and extremely deep parts of oceans.
where most sharks live
most sharks live in the oceans, but some live in lakes.
shark fins
shark fins are arranged for sorting before selling them for souvenirs or soup.
rest of shark
when divers find fin-less sharks in the same area, they know finning is going on.
ENDANGERMENT
If anything, humans kill and waste more sharks than sharks kill or even bite humans.
FINNING
When the people catch the shark, they cut off as many fins as they can. Then, whether the shark is still alive or dead, they throw the carcass (remains of a body) back into the water. Latter, the fins are either sold as souvenirs or for soup.
FISHING LINES
When sharks are just swimming, it's hard for them to see fishing lines littered in the ocean. They get tangled in it and the line or netting gets wrapped around its neck, cutting of its supply of oxygen, or choking it.
A SHARKS PLACE IN LIFE
We should protect sharks because of their natural beauty and their part in the oceans ecosystem. They keep the population of fish and seals in a healthy balance. By eating the weak, slow, and deformed things, they keep healthy DNA jeans in nature. No other animal can play the shark's role. They are somewhat in the top of the food chain/web, but have other natural predators such as orcas and toothed whales.
