Message from the Principal

Kia ora koutou,

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori. Happy Matariki everyone!

It was wonderful to start the week with our Pinehill whole school Matariki shared morning tea. Thank you to the many family members who joined us on Monday and also for all your contributions of food to share during our celebration. What a feast we had! This has been the first whole school event we have been able to host in over a year. We didn’t want anyone to miss out, hence our celebration taking place outside as we are still restricted with numbers in the hall during Orange Light setting. It was wonderful to bring everyone together and for our tamariki to share their learning of Matariki, music, singing and for our Kapa Haka group to have the opportunity to perform. A big thank you to Merimoana Kenrick for planning and organising our Pinehill School Matariki whole school morning tea.

Cluster Cross Country

Congratulations to all the runners who represented Pinehill School at the Super Cluster Cross Country last Wednesday. Mr van Beusekom and Mr Mathers attended this event with our runners and came back full of praise. Praise for the effort our runners put in and praise for the wonderful ambassadors our runners were for Pinehill School. We are very proud of all our runners and their efforts at the Cluster Cross Country as well as their display of the Pinehill Way outside the school grounds in our first cluster school event in over a year.

Mathex

Congratulations to our students who represented Pinehill School at the Inter School Mathex last Wednesday. Mrs Milne and Miss Everett attended this event with our students and there was a buzz of excitement on their return. The students have put a lot of mahi in each week practising challenging math problems leading up to the event. We have had reports come back from teachers and parents who attended regarding the outstanding collaboration, work effort and excellent display of the Pinehill Way from all our Pinehill Mathex representatives. The students told me they were aiming to place in the top 20. We are still waiting for the results. We are very proud of our students and their efforts.

A reminder that this week is a short week with today being the last school day of the week for Pinehill students. The school is closed tomorrow, Thursday 23rd June for an accord Teacher Only Day. Teachers will be engaged in professional learning both onsite and offsite for The Local Curriculum and The Writers Toolbox. School is also closed on Friday 24th June for Matariki Public holiday.

I wish everyone a wonderful Matariki celebration and long weekend ahead.

Empathy

Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practise this through being kind and compassionate towards other people.

When we do acts of kindness for others (no matter how small), a chemical called oxytocin gets released in our brains, making us feel happier. So being kind is a win-win situation: the recipient of the kindness feels good and so does the giver.

In Room 13, they have been thinking about showing kindness through helping others. Our tamariki are never too young to learn about and practise helping others.

Thanks for sharing, Room 13.

Cross Country - Cluster Day

Thank you to the runners who represented our school at the Super Cluster Cross Country races on Wednesday 15th. We had some outstanding performances and all our runners ran to the best of their ability. Special congratulations to Daisy Yang for a superb run in finishing second in the Y4 Girls' race.

Thanks to all the parents who came and supported the team in the sunshine and the rain, and to Darren Mathers for his tireless devotion to the cause.

BOARD NEWS

At the beginning of each academic year our students in years 4-6 sit national tests for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and maths. Compared to the national averages we are tracking well in all areas which is very pleasing.

You may have seen in the recent school newsletters that there is an election coming up at school to elect parent representatives onto the Board of Trustees. Boards of trustees are responsible for the governance of schools. Our role, as trustees, is to make sure that Pinehill School is run in the best interests of our students and our community. The Board is tasked with strategic planning and providing oversight and accountability for the school. This is a rewarding volunteer position and is usually a 3 year commitment. We have meetings at the school in the evenings with the school's senior leadership team twice per term. We would welcome anyone who would like to know more about the Pinehill School Board of Trustees to contact us via email with any questions, and a number of us will also be at the farewell assembly at the end of term 2 as well if you would like to chat in person. bot@pinehill.school.nz

We are happy to report that the school has made some great progress with the replacement of the new top playground. As per Ministry of Education guidelines, the project has gone out to tender, and a Ministry project manager has been appointed to manage the build. Here is a drawing of the final design
