McKinney Boyd Band Newsletter
Week of 3/23-3/27
Important updates due to school closure!!!
Let's all take a collective breath in this chaos
I don't know about you, but personally this whole situation has caused an incredible amount of stress on me and my family. I am sure that most of you can relate.
It seems we are all in a constant rainstorm of new issues and are blindly searching for solutions. I can hardly stand to have the news on for more than a few minutes without feeling like the end of this is no where to be seen.
However, I know there are positives out there and I see our community still coming together knowing we are all going through this together. Let's all remember to take a breath and we will weather this storm one step at a time. #broncostrong
I know that I appreciate your patience and grace as we all try to continue to support one another.
Spring Trip: Another Update
***Understand that this is a point of high stress for every director/travel agency in the country at this point. I do not have all the answers but you can rest assured that taking care of our families is the highest point of focus right now and doing right by you is my highest priority. I am doing EVERYTHING in my power to protect you and find solutions. If you reach out to me with trip questions, I will respond as quickly as I can within 24-48hrs. I appreciate all your grace.
There has been yet another kerfuffle in communicating with Directors Choice (Our travel agency). In an attempt to be open and honest about our plan please read carefully......
All three McKinney high school bands are traveling in the same window (between April 24th-April 28th).
The link for the insurance that was sent out yesterday was mixed up and incorrect. The link was for McKinney High's Dates (April 25-28th).
For those families/travelers who have already signed up: I AM WORKING DIRECTLY WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANY TO GET THIS STRAIGHTENED OUT. I WILL REACH BACK OUT TO YOU ONCE ONCE I GET RESPONDED TO WITH THEIR SOLUTION.
For families that had not signed up but would still like to, here is the corrected McKinney Boyd link:
Final payment date to enter is MARCH 25th.
***FAMILIES NOW HAVE UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY MONDAY 23RD TO SIGN UP FOR THE INSURANCE. THIS IS YOUR SAFEST BET TO GET THE MOST MONEY BACK IF/WHEN WE CANCEL THE TRIP FOR EVERYONE.
ELearning is on its way
If you watched Dr. McDaniel's video yesterday then you know there is a plan in place to begin ELearning over the next few weeks.
If you missed the remind from earlier in the week (Please sign up with info below), we will be using Smartmusic (through Canvas) to participate in band classes.
There are no official grades/assignments due at this time. For now, Please explore the software during your practice sessions to see all that it can offer to you (Solos/etudes/technical exercises/ sightreading)

Once you make a profile you should be able to see all of your assignments. Smart Music allows you to play each assignment with accompaniment and a metronome. It listens to you through the microphone and grades you based on staying with the met, correct notes, correct rhythms and It automatically grades you. The nice part is that you can try again and practice as many times as you want before submitting!
I have a google hangout open for any questions you might have. (You must be signed in to your MISD google account and then just search for Travis Treadwell). This will save my inbox and replying back and forth.
More Smart Music Tips:
How to view and complete assignments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcHeU-GbcWE
We strongly suggest using earbuds or headphones when you practice and record assignments. This will allow you to still hear the metronome track and accompaniment music, but will let your microphone only pick up YOUR sound playing.
You can practice/record an assignment as many times as you want! SmartMusic will save all of your takes. You will have the option to turn in or submit the one you liked best.

Due to Covid19 closures, the following professional groups are giving free concerts through streaming for the foreseeable future.

Important information for Private lesson students/teachers
We are HIGHLY ENCOURAGING families who take private lessons to communicate with their teachers and work to the best of their ability to continue lessons remotely through Skype, Facetime or work out home lessons.
If you feel that you do not want to risk it, then we suggest "donating" your normal lesson fee's and working with your teacher to reschedule as necessary.
***This suggestion is for your discretion***:
We want to make sure that you are aware that teaching privately in some cases is the only source of income for many of our teachers. Any week/day that school is cancelled directly impacts their livelihood. Our teachers also have mortgages, rent, bills and groceries to take care of. Please keep this in mind when making your decisions.
