Important Reminders for Morning Drop-Off & After school Pick-Up

Please be reminded that when dropping your learner off in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon, you are only permitted to use the front car loop at the very front of our school of Ranch Trail. We have several parents attempting to pick up their learners in the back of the school where buses arrive and depart, and this is very dangerous for learners crossing in front of buses. If you are seen picking up a learners anywhere other than the front car loop, you'll politely be asked to go around to the appropriate area to pick up and your learner will meet you there.

Final Round of STAAR Testing- Next Week

Next week we have our final STAAR Tests of the year. On Tuesday May 2nd, all learners will take their Math STAAR test, unless they are in Algebra 1. Algebra will test on Wednesday May 3rd. This test is expected to take longer than in years past.

Learners no longer have a testing time limit so our lunch times may be later than normal.

We are asking parents to help support learners in the ways listed below.

  • Send a cold lunch from home that learners can eat in their classroom. If you needed a school lunch on reading day, we will plan to have one for your learner for Math.

  • Please plan to send snacks and bottled water with your learner in addition to lunch.

  • Please be sure they've charged their ipad completely along with their apple pencil.

  • Please send learner to school with their charger.

  • We will have a stylus backup they can use if they have lost their apple pencil.

Wishing you all a wonderful spring break. We will see you all on Monday March 20th!

Pre Participation Physicals for Athletics

Every CISD Learner wishing to participate in a UIL sanctioned sport for the 2023-2024 school year must have an updated Pre-Participation Physical on file before the start of the school year in August. You may choose to get this done at your own pediatrician, but it MUST be dated AFTER April 1, 2023, to be valid for the 2023-2024 school year.

On April 15th at Coppell High School, CISD has partnered with area physicians to complete Pre-Participation Physicals for CISD athletes at a low cost to parents and guardians. You may sign up for a timeslot and pay at Eventbrite.

For students attending CMS West for 2023-2024 physicals are needed for: Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Wrestling, Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, and Track and Field.

For students attending CHS9 for 2023-2023 physicals are needed for: Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Wrestling, Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Track and Field, Swim and Dive, Baseball, Softball, and Golf.

Attached is a copy of the flyer for the April 15th Physical day at CHS, and a blank copy of the Pre-Participation Physical to be completed by a physician can be found at the link below.

March- Texas History Month and Women's History Month

March is Texas History Month, a time to celebrate our state's unique history. Recognizing the importance of Texas history, the state legislature enacted legislation on June 20, 2003, declaring March 1-31 of every year as Texas History Month. Several key events which shaped the destiny of Texas occurred in the month of March: Texas Independence Day, Flag Day, and the birthday of Sam Houston on March 2; Alamo Heroes Day on March 6; and Goliad Heroes Day on March 27.

March is also Women’s History Month, a time to honor women’s contributions in United States history. Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by California’s Sonoma School District in 1978. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. According to President Carter, "too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength, and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well." In 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.”

February Recognition Days

National Black History Month:

February is National Black History Month, which celebrates the contributions that African Americans have made to American history in their struggles for freedom and equality, and deepens our understanding of our nation's history. Founded by historian Carter G. Woodson, black history week was first celebrated on Feb. 12, 1926, to commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/ editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. During the U.S. bicentennial in 1976, black history week was expanded to a month-long celebration. Since then, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as African American History Month and endorsed a specific theme. This year’s theme, “Black Resistance” explores how "African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms,” since the nation's earliest days.

Thursday February 2nd- Texas Military Heroes Day:

Generations have learned the names of famous men that have sacrificed much on behalf of Texas: Travis, Bowie, Crockett, Fannin, and Houston, to name a few. In modern times, Texans like Audie Murphy earned the Medal of Honor for service during WWII against the German Army and Doris (Dorie) Miller became the first African American to earn the Navy Cross for his heroic role during the Bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Students Leaving School before Holiday Breaks

As a reminder, if you choose to leave school before a holiday break or before the end of the year, your learner will not be provided their work early, be able to get assistance from teachers on trying to work on posted work, or provided opportunities we offer in person at school. We understand that the price of airfare goes up when learners are already out of school and it can be appealing to leave school early, but we won't be able to excuse those absences or provide remote learning.

Spelling Bee

This year, we will use the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s online testing platform to hold our classroom spelling bee via an online spelling and word meaning test.

The first step to spelling bee participation for your child is registering for the online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com.

I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ThKRsffiFc

Once you have registered, I will be able to assign the appropriate test to your child. Your child must be present at school on Thursday, November 17 to participate in the classroom bee.

If your child advances to the school competition, you will be notified by email on Friday, November 18. This year, our school-level competition will be held in-person on Dec 2, 2022.

Remember, the first step to spelling bee participation is to register at online-test.spellingbee.com. Please register your child by Tuesday, November 15. Students who are not registered by the deadline will not be able to participate. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.

Please reach out to Stephanie Tangassi if you have any questions about our school spelling bee program.

As cooler weather approaches, we know learners will be bringing jackets and cold weather accessories to school. We have a lost and found at the front of our building but it fills up quickly. Please encourage your learners to check the lost and found often if they've left something behind and label their belongings with their first and last name to make it easier to return it to them.

Spirit Wear Store OPEN

If you'd like to purchase any additional spirit wear, please visit the link below! Special thanks to our PTO board for all their work on this!

Friday September 23rd

Start with Hello Week Sept. 26th-30th, 2022

Social isolation is the overwhelming feeling of being left out, lonely or treated like you are invisible. Young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence and depression. As a result, many further pull away from society, struggle with learning and social

development, or choose to hurt themselves or others. We can change this!

Start With Hello brings attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation and empowers young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school, youth organization, and community.

Start With Hello Week is organized by Sandy Hook Promise, a national nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. They are focused on preventing gun violence (and other forms of violence and victimization) by educating and mobilizing youth and adults on mental health and wellness programs that identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals.

You can learn more about Start With Hello by watching this video

Start With Hello Week will be September 26-30 2022 and we encourage our students to participate in the activities included in the calendar.

Coppell Debate Academy offers middle school students the opportunity to attend weekly speech and debate classes and to prepare for competitive tournaments throughout the school year. Registration for 2022-23 is open through September at www.coppelldebateacademy.com. Contact Dr. Jason Sykes with any questions at jsykes@coppellisd.com.

Lunch Containers

We've had several learners having lots of trouble opening their lunch containers. If you are sending a container to school with your learner, please be sure to practice at home to make sure they're able to open it on their own.

This is especially necessary if you are sending food you're trying to keep warm. If you put hot food in containers they are often sealing and becoming difficult to open. Please take a look at containers used and keep any that are hard to open at home.

Friday August 26th

Activity Bundles/School Supplies

Learners are continuing to receive their grade level shirts from PTO as part of the activity/supply bundle so many of you have purchased. We have one more batch of shirts and hoodies to hand out next week, but if you haven't yet done so, please visit the link below to pay your supply fee. If you are a family in need, please reach out to sbalarin@coppellisd.com.

https://cmswpto.membershiptoolkit.com/home

As a reminder, learners don't have a school supply list for parents to purchase supplies from. We most often use their ipads, so we have asked that everyone pay the student activity/supply fee through PTO. This will cover any classroom supplies needed.

All you need to send with learners to school are:

  • a set of earbuds
  • something to write with
  • Fully charged ipad- new students will receive their ipad at school

Welcome Back to School from Dr. Balarin

Good Morning!

I got married over the summer and my name has changed. For those of you that met me as Dr. Thornton, my new last name is Balarin. If you are new to West, I'll share with you that this is my 9th school year at West. I'm starting my 4th year as Principal. I was Asst. Principal for 5 years before moving into this role. I'm also starting my 16th year in education and all of those years have been in middle school. I love this age group and our entire team is here to help you through what some parents consider a difficult time in parenting. You'll see your children evolve and grow A LOT during their middle school years, and sometimes that growth and development can cause them to be moody or to push you away. All of that is normal so hang in there and know that we will love them and take great care of them!

We are so excited to welcome our learners this coming Wednesday August 17th. Our staff has been hard at work to prepare to start the school year! We will be following an alternate bell schedule this first week to make sure everyone has time to eat lunch and get any support they need. After this week we will follow our standard bell schedule.

Unfortunately, I am home this week as everyone in my house has COVID and I'm starting to show symptoms. I don't want to put any of our staff or learners at risk. If you need me, don't hesitate to reach out. My new email address is sbalarin@coppellisd.com.

For this week, and always- it's always a good idea to involve our counselors and assistant principals as a first line of defense in supporting you and your learner.

Morning Pickup/Afternoon Dropoff

It is critical that all parents understand our drop off and pickup procedures to ensure the safety of our learners and staff.

For both drop off and pickup please follow the procedures below.

  • Learners may ONLY be dropped off and picked up in the front car loop at the entrance of our school off of Ranch Trail. You may not pickup or drop off in any other location unless directed to do so by our staff.
  • Always pull as far forward as possible before letting your student out of the car or stopping for them to get inside the car. Our staff will be directing you forward so please follow their directives and pull all the way forward.
  • Please stay in the far lane closest to the school against the curb during drop off and pickup. You may move around the traffic line once your child has been picked up or dropped off. Please do not cut in line.
  • Parents may not pull into the parking lot unless they have an appointment with a staff member inside the building. Please do not park and walk learners inside.
  • The line of cars on Ranch Trail can get very long. Please be patient with us. As parents learn the traffic route, it will get better. We count on everyone to help speed this up by following the directions of our staff and Dallas County Sheriff's Deputies.
  • Parents can also enter the school off of Sainstbury coming in from Denton Tap and coming around to the front of the school. As these two traffic patterns merge we ask that parents use a zipper pattern by alternating one by one to get into the line at the front of the school.

Drop off begins at 7:30 and learners must be in class in their seat at 8:10. All learners go straight to 1st period. We will allow some grace as traffic lines can be long on the first few days of school.

Pick-up begins at 3:35 school dismissal and all learners must be picked up by 4:00.

Schedule Changes

As a reminder, because of our increased enrollment and the addition of 4 teachers last week, our counselors are still working to make final adjustments to student schedules to balance out class sizes.

Please be sure to check your child's schedule and have them take a picture of it or print it at home on Wednesday morning or Tuesday night before school starts.

If you don't know how to view your child's schedule in Home Access Center, please visit this link.

Reminders for a Safe Start to School

  • Parents may not walk learners into school. All parents must stay in their car if dropping your learner off at school. Please follow our drop off and pickup procedures below.

  • All learners must arrive on a bus or be dropped off in the front car loop. If you want your learner to walk to school, please remember we have no crossing guards or safety measures. If your learner is walking, you will need to walk them across the street. This is not our recommendation for arriving to school and poses a serious safety issue.

School Supplies

As a reminder, learners don't have a school supply list for parents to purchase supplies from. We most often use their ipads, so we have asked that everyone pay the student activity/supply fee through PTO. This will cover any classroom supplies needed.

All you need to send with learners to school are:

  • a set of earbuds
  • something to write with
  • Fully charged ipad- new students will receive their ipad at school

Buses

All learners who ride a bus will arrive at the back of our school and be picked up in the same place. We will have more instructions for learners once they arrive at school about what to do in the afternoon.

The district sent an email last week to families about transportation. If you did not receive it, this is likely because you are new to our district or enrolled late in the summer. Some of our learners will not have a bus route for the first day of school. Please see the schedule below for when you will receive your child's bus routing information so you can begin riding the bus. These dates are based on when parents completed laserfiche (formerly Powerschool) enrollment where the request for transportation was completed.

If you enrolled via laserfiche/powerschool...

  • Before July 22nd- routing information will be available on August 12th, 2022 to begin riding
  • Between July 22nd and July 29th- routing information will be available on August 22nd, 2022 to begin riding.
  • Between July 29th and August 5th- routing information will be available on August 29th, 2022 to begin riding.
  • Between August 5th and 31st- routing information will be available on September 6th, 2022 to begin riding.
  • After September 1st- routing information will be available in a normal 3 business day turnaround to begin riding.

This timeline also applies to student address changes.

Students MAY NOT ride the bus until parents get an email with their route information.
Please reach out to Durham Transportation with questions.
transportation@coppellisd.com or 972-304-8012

In addition, Durham Transportation will NOT be distributing bus passes prior to the first day of school on Wednesday, August 17. Bus passes will be distributed via the schools prior to Tuesday, September 6. Therefore, families do not need to pick up a bus pass for their children to ride the bus when school starts on August 17. Bus passes will be required starting on Tuesday, September 6.

Lunch Money

If your learner is buying lunch, please be sure to put money on your child's lunch account at https://www.coppellisd.com/Page/573.

The federal grant that provided free lunch for all PK-5th graders has ended and anyone who needs free or reduced lunch prices will need to reapply at the link above.

Yearbook/School ID Photos

Yearbook/School ID photos
I want to extend our apologies to those that waited in very long lines to have school ID and yearbook photos taken at schedule pickup. The photographer is going to offer two more opportunities to have those photos taken. If you have NOT YET had a yearbook/ID photo taken and received the school ID, you may do so at one of the times below:

Tuesday August 16th (8AM-noon) in the large gym (please enter at the back of the school)
Friday September 30th (during the school day)- parents don't need to be here
