A letter from Jordan Mills

September 11, 2020

Dear Bridgeport Families,

Welcome to the 20-21 school year! It goes without saying that this school year will be unlike any other, but I am absolutely confident that our Bridgeport students will rise to this tremendous challenge and make incredible growth, even under these circumstances. Our staff is skilled and their dedication to students is unmatched. Thank you for being our partners this year. We are excited to work together to overcome barriers and celebrate growth with our students! Here are a few important updates and reminders:

Materials and iPads

Thank you to everyone who came by to pick up materials last week. If you took home workbooks, particularly Math Expressions workbooks, please wait for instructions from your teacher about when and how to use those materials. They will align with upcoming lessons.

If you did not pick up your student’s iPad or materials this week, please talk with your student’s teacher about options for when and how to get them. Our office is open Monday through Friday between 7:30 and 4:00 to pick up any items that your student might need, including school provided workbooks at items. Ring the doorbell out front and we will come outside to meet you.

End of Summer Course

In your student’s Canvas account, they have been assigned an “End of Summer” course. This is one way that you can practice using Canvas before school starts next week. The course will be open all through next week and should take about 30 minutes to complete. If you are just getting started with your iPad and looking for a basic introduction first, here is a link to a helpful video.

First Day of School

All students will be learning online until at least mid-November. The first day of school is Monday, September 14 at 8:30. Here are the written instructions for logging onto Canvas for students’ first class meeting. This Barker also includes a short welcome video that shows how to log onto Canvas on the first day of classes. Homeroom classes will open for students by 8:00 Monday morning.

First Week of School Schedule

The first week of school schedule will look different than a normal week. Monday, 9/14 through Wednesday 9/16, the only interactive (live) instruction that students will have is their 8:30-9:00 class meeting. After that, they will be assigned a couple of short independent activities to help them warm up and prepare for the year while teachers spend their days doing family connect meetings. (You should have received a link from your teacher to sign up for that family connect meeting. Please contact us if you have not.) The regular daily schedule will begin on Thursday, September 17.

Families have been asking how attendance will look this year. As you know, the best way for students to learn is interactive instruction where they can connect with other students in their class and get feedback from their teacher. For that reason, we would strongly encourage you to support your student in attending the class instruction at the times on the daily schedule. This will be the best learning experience for them under the circumstances. Attendance at these interactive instruction sessions will also be the way that they are marked present each day.

We also recognize that there may be times when students need to complete their work outside of the school day. A student will also be marked present for participation in this way. That could include turning in an assignment, sending questions about an assignment, or talking with the teacher over the phone about classwork. As a district we will use the term “alternative present” for this kind of participation, though I would like to assure you that this is only for tracking how students and teachers are connecting. That distinction will not impact student attendance numbers. If your student is ill or has an appointment and cannot participate on a particular day, please call or email the office.

PE and Music

As mentioned previously, our PE and Music classes will be structured differently this year. Across the district specialists were placed in classrooms in order to reduce class size and eventually accommodate the hybrid model once it is safe to return to school. As a result, STEAM will not be one of our courses this year. However, we are excited to welcome Sarah Allan, music teacher from Metzger, and Diana Ayers, PE teacher from Alberta Rider, into our Bridgeport team! These creative and energetic specialists will be alternating between Bridgeport and their other school, getting to know our bulldogs and working to teach their specialty.

You can expect to start seeing lessons and activities from them in Canvas. These activities can be completed each day in the afternoon. After some initial introductory lessons in the coming week, students can expect two weeks in a row of lessons from either PE or music, alternating to the opposite subject every two weeks. Our specialists are looking forward to getting to know our bulldogs!

There has been a lot of information shared over the summer and the past few weeks. Sorting through all the updates can be overwhelming. Please do not hesitate to contact our office at 503-431-4200 or with any questions. Our website is also being updated regularly with the most current information.

Mr. Karr's Counseling Corner

Hi Bridgeport families,

I hope you are doing well. I wanted to create a space where members of our community could find counseling, food, and other community resources. I hope this website will help us stay connected during this unsettling time. On the website you will find resources for supporting students at home, such as breathing and relaxation tools, ways to support children in identifying their emotions, and strategies for managing difficult behaviors. I will also post read alouds periodically and will be picking stories that seem relevant to the current time and the current needs of our students.

Thank you,

Jordan Karr
